22lr scope for back yard target shooting

I am looking for a scope for my 22lr bolt gun. In and around the $400 range. Approximately 4 to 16 power with side focus. Shooting between 25 and 100m. Illuminated reticle a bonus. Mostly paper targets but occasionally a squirrel takes over my bird feeder. What are some good options? I saw a Burris 4.5 to 14 x 42 on here that really interested me but side focus only goes down to 50m. Thanks for your help and ideas. John
 
My suggestion would be the Cabelas/BP Covenant series. I have the Cov-4 in 6-24x50 FFP-SF 30mm tube and there is a series '7' now avail too. These run in the $400 range, especially if on sale. The C-4 has numbered MOA reticle tree that's great for correcting holds for diff ammo and wind. I can shoot 1.5-2" at 100 with Sav B22 and CZ 455 using these scopes with just 'OK' ammo.
 
I just picked up a bushnell engage 4-16 x 44 for 519 new. If you’re willing to stretch the budget a little bit. Haven’t mounted it but it for the price it’s really clear. Moa hashmarks and a pretty fine reticle which should be good for 22. I have a 60 and 120 yard berm in the back and want to get into more precision 22.
 
BTW- I had a Bushnell Engage 6-18x50 and it was OK - 'till I saw the Covenant with Numbered (every 4-bars) hash marks. The Bush went onto my .223 for 'really L-D hunting' and I got the Covs for targets. Better reticle PLUS the extra mag.

I run one of these for ORPS and it's excellent
 
I definitely am interested in the Athlon scopes. The Covenant series worries me with their lack of warranty. About what I use right now. I have a Burris Fullfield 3-9x40 on the gun right now. I find it to be a decent but very basic scope. I had an older Diamondback 4-12x40AO that was pretty nice until evening, which is when I do my shooting, then it performed quite poorly, as in it got very dark looking through it. My Bushnell 4200 6-24x40AO (which is on a 17HMR) is far better in low light, however I do not really like the reticle, MIL dot I think it is called. Thanks for the input. I am open to more choices too if anyone has more ideas.

Mine says lifetime warranty on the box. I wonder if one could use that and a claim of false advertising to get it fixed/replaced if the need arised?
 
I have a vx3 4.5-14x40AO with a fine duplex
Awesome scope on a 22. I have a home range out to 150yrds with steel gongs.

I have taken 22s with that scope out to 400m on a 24”x24” gong.
I also pop grouse heads at 5yrds.

I haven't looked through the Athlon Talos, but I've got a couple Argos and a Helos, and wouldn't hesitate to buy another Athlon. Jerry at Mystic Precision sells them as well.

Another thing about the Cov-4 - The parallax goes down to 15yds. I used one on my .223 and could see bullet holes clearly at 180 yds (all my range had). Prob see the .22LR but never shot that distance3 - - yet. Spring is here, sorta.
 
Dad bought a B&L 4-16x50 it has a AO down to 10 meters. I think it might be either a bushnell 3200 or 4200 elite when they were made by bushnell.

Really nice clear glass.

Thats another scope you could look at?

Otherwise lots of good opinions on different scopes!
