yup that would do it, I bet there would have been lots more love in the hunting and sporting arms section
Probably not much love for 300 BLK in Canada because it really shines suppressed, especially in a semi-auto platform.
Not being able to suppress it loses the allure of the 300 BLK for many. The 300 BLK as a cartridge makes a lot of compromises in order to accomplish the goals of being an intermediate cartridge in a semi-auto (ar15) that takes very well to being suppressed. Putting a 300 BLK in a bolt gun that isn't going to be suppressed leaves you with a cartridge which you can't really make use of any of its intended advantages, and leaves you with all the compromises.

In an AR with a suppressor I'd go 300 Blk over 223 for most applications. In a bolt gun, its the same reason, why shoot a 30 cal with an effective range of about 300m when you could shoot 9/10 others with effective ranges at 1000m or more. If I could build a semi auto suppressed with thermals to pig hunt at night 100% I would build a 300 blk. But for a bolt gun, even a short barrelled one, You are way better off with 308.
I would LOVE to shoot suppressed, that's part of my problem, making too much noise will annoy the neighbours and get me banned from the properties I shoot on. Not much open land in eastern Ontario
Trail Boss in a bolt 300blk is probably the quietest round I can put together. 5gr TB with 110gr projectile fills the cartrige nicely, in a 6.5CM or 308 it leaves too much empty space.

Suppressed is the way to go. Canada is so dumb for making suppressors illegal.
Lately I've been suppressing everything - it's just much more pleasant to shoot, and I value my hearing.
And I get trying to minimize the amount of noise.
Granted the hunting and sporting arms section would have been a better "move" location,
I seem to recall a thread from several year ago where a guy had ATRS put together a 10.5"(or there a bouts) .300WM rifle for "squirrel defense". He dealt with similar criticism but going the other way... Too little barrel to make use of the powder capacity creating a flamethrower. It sounds like a .300BO is exactly what you're looking for. Shooting subsonic ammunition from a very short barrel, you'll have much better suited case capacity over a .308 case with just a few grains of powder rattling around in it and/or much less propensity to create a flamethrower at deer hunting velocities.
Personally, I think the little .223 case has all kinds of under-utilized potential for necking up. The TCU cartridges and various wildcats burn a third less powder of their .308win based counterparts, produce a fraction of noise and the recoil, give good barrel life and provide sufficient energy for deer sized game at ranges most people should stick to anyways. With component prices/availability being what they are, what's not to like!

Pistol rounds would also fill the niche of being quiet(ish) out of a shot barrel setup, such as .45acp.
However, lots of nuances to getting that work, probably not worth the hassle.
