The coyotes eat them. That last one was close-probably 20 metres
Haws and owls don't mind a snack either. I make a point of not kicking them down the hole.

Tree squirrels are delicious so I was wondering how ground rodents taste.
I have a 17 HMR so I was impressed by the damage it did. How big would that critter be?

Probably 6" tall by 1"wide. Same .17 grain tip on the M2 as the Hmr.

Yup, amazing scene to watch.
At first I was dumbfounded to see it the very first time especially through the scope.
Then to see a hoard of gophers attack the one standing that I wounded was something else.
Of course the wounding was unintentional and was finished off with a follow up and then rained carnage on the remaining cannibals ensued
Look forward to the upcoming season.

^hey sailor (that sounded wrong)..there aren't any gophers in Ontario, my understanding is that the eastern end of their range is the western side of Manitoba...but I could be wrong on that. Referring to "gophers", the common name for Richardson Ground Squirrels.
If you were referring to groundhogs, we have those in Ontario and I know...because I took my buddy out last Saturday and got him into 2 of them. 2 great shots with his .223, literally 1 minute apart. Popped the first one, another materialized to see what all the fuss was about. Not common to get a "double", but also not the first time I've seen that.
It's why the first thing you do after taking your shot is "nothing", just sit still.

Pff, who needs puny Ground Squirrels when you have frikken Ground HOGS? HOG > squirrel
I started out shooting groundhogs with a .223.. and was always disappointed that my friend was getting way more spectacular kills with his .243.
So I bought a .25-06 mainly just for groundhogging.. it's like hitting them with an RPG XD
But the old days of having farmers welcome you with smiles and open arms to shoot groundhogs on their property are long gone. Now when we go ask permission from the new gen of yuppies that inevitably answer the door the answer is always a look of horror that we want to shoot the cute little fluffy wildlife.
