45-70 Semi-Auto?

being as this is a hunting forum.... i have to ask WHY?

a semi auto .45-70 would be suitable for???

.45-70's in canada tend to be used for large and or dangerous game. semi-auto DG rifle? don;t have to be a PH in africa to see that's not a bright idea.

sounds like a fix to a problem that never existed....

Why not?

the answer to questions asked to those without logical argument :D

sometimes thise is a simple answer to why something "isn't"

done being deep, back to the beer....

There are lot's of why's out there, like why would some one need a hunting gun in 7.62X39 or why would you need a 25 round mag for a .22, or why would you want an AR-15... I say, Why not?

I think a 45/70 semi auto would be cool, would I want one? no, but I would love to shoot one. Just like an AR, I have only fired a few rounds and I really enjoyed it but I have no plans on buying one (unless they magically became non-res)

Cheers.

You know, Remington could probably come up with a slide action rifle in .45-70, using a tubular magazine to avoid feeding problems.

With a line of thinkin like that, you could also say

WHY...any other calibers other than one for large dangerious game, one for medium game, & one for varmints, obviously there would be no need for a pointless target round would there!

If often wonder if you actually think about what you say sometimes??

well then I want a bright pink 5lb belt fed .416 rigby. but it has to be lever action, with a laser sight

you know, just cause ;)

i still think that if you are attracted to this type of cartridge you should be looking at the deerfield carbine.

no, its not a .45/70, but its as close as youll probably get to one in a factory semi-auto, its one of the most reliable, low-maintenance and durable semi-automatic actions and can be scoped easily. ammo is also much cheaper.

the only real drawback is that it is a hideous-looking rifle. it looks like a $200 10/22 on 'roids. ruger really needs to get over that type of styling :runaway:.

Check out the 450 Hornady, nicknamed the Thumper. It sends a 250gr bullet at over 2200 fps, which rivals or exceeds 45/70 trapdoor (factory)loads. I saw an advert in the last Gun Digest, and apparently it was developed in the memory of the late Col Jeff Cooper, who wanted a lower velocity bullet which emphasized mass rather than velocity. It is stated to be effective on large game to 250 yds. All you need to do is buy an upper reciever to convert your AR 15 in minutes.

Well I'm not gonna ask you WHY you want a nice pink rifle :)
I just hope it fixes your problem ;)
I'm sure you'll get the attention you crave when your out with the boys :D

"...the answer to questions asked to those without logical argument..." Responding with "Why not?" gets you 100% on a philosophy exam though.
"...SVT...Bren guns..." Yep. They work, however, rimmed cartridges don't work as well as rimless cartridges out of semi-autos.
The main reason why there's no semi-auto .45-70s is because there's no demand, Stateside.

Doubt that there was much demand for a rifle with a triangular barrel, but Remington is offering one.
There are a lot of offerings that no one really needs, so the industry creates a demand. I wouldn't have thought that there was a demand for .22 rifles with bubblegun pink laminated thumbhole stocks, but Savage ran off close to 800 before Christmas, for a specific customer's order, not on spec.

Personally I like the idea and I don't see why it couldn't work well. A tube magazine would be fine and even a box mag should be fine. After all rimmed
.303 cartridges feed well from the box magazine of an Enfield.

However the one that I really think would be viable would be the Browning BAR in .450 Marlin. Browning already makes the BAR with a magnum bolt face and they are already using .450 Marlin barrels in the BLR. It wouldn't be a big jump to do it. It would be accurate, powerful and offer a fast second shot with reduced recoil due to gas operation. What's not to like?

45/70 auto

How about a 11/87 in 20gage-handloaded with 45cal bullets, with the proper powder you can get 1900fpc. An idea I've had for a long time?

45/70 auto

I have a .458, shooting mostly cast bullets, thats when I started to think of a semi 20 gage with .458 bullets.
