Hello there to all the members of CGN!!

The following was posted else where on the web. Ustauk ask if I would bring this to CGN......As such I have the following for your consideration:

We all know that May 1, 2020 was a very dark day for the firearms community with the effective banning of the AR-15 through order in council.

As a result many of us ended up with very expensive builds we could no longer take to the range or use.

I don’t know about you, but I needed a way to stymie the semi auto itch!! Well what if I told you there is a legal way for one to do that?

Enter the Jard J-180 builders set!! This receiver set is new to the country, has a proper FRT, and can be built into a none-restricted semi-auto rifle that takes SOME AR-15 parts.

The J-180 is a hybrid design that borrows from a lot of different platforms, and is loosely base on the AR-180 design but uses a Stoner-like expanding gas system rather then true direct impingement, with the entire recoil system contained inside the receiver!!

There is provision for the attachment of a buffer tube, but its no more than a convenient way to mount a carbine stock, which gives the ability to use a folding stock adapter like the one offered by MDT if so desired (I have not tried this yet but hope to do so on my next build!!)

These builders sets are sold by Sylvester sports and come pretty complete!! All you need to add is a barrel with the appropriated gas block & gas tube, fore-end, and a stock assembly.

Some people have reported issues with their builds, however mine worked from the first round!! To be fair I was using my own proven 68 grain HPBT reloads over H4895 power, Winchester brass and Russian small rifle primers

So if you will indulge me I will share a few picture with you.

This is the compete receiver set (I block out the serial number but left the price before shipping and tax)

The above is the assembled rifle with specs as follows:

Upper:
  • New Classy Shrouded Muzzle Brake
  • As new 18.6" long with an SPR straight fluted profile, Chambered in 223 Wylde with a 1-8 twist
  • Lightly used Vltor Low profile gas block
  • As new Melonited Rifle length Gas-tube with pin
  • New MRA V2 M-LOK AR-15 Handguard - 13.5", Anodized Black
  • A set of MDT M-Lok Fore-end weights
  • New Jard J180 upper (with out dust cover) that included the Proprietary Bolt & Carrier group with side charging handle

Lower:
  • Jard J180 Lower with lower parts kit and the Jard ARJ trigger group
  • Standard A-2 Grip
  • Extended Carbine Buffer Tube with lock ring (meant for AR-308 Rifles because I like the extra length as a left handed shooter)
  • Luth MBA-3 Carbine stock
  • I was using some of my own LAR 10 round mags with out extension that dropped free and functioned well

The following were taken during the first range visit (indoors of course!!)

I started with a red dot to get on paper and the smaller optic made it easier to do function checks!!

The above were the results

I then mounted a magnified optic on it

This was the best group of the day with 5 shots at 48m using the standard fire control group. The bright green dot you can barley see was 1/2"

WL3nI15.jpg

I then proceed to put a additional rounds through. The target had 1/2 inch inside dots

l9iqKWP.jpg

That session I put 150 rounds through the rifle with no issues.

The only issue I had was with my reloads, they were seated ever so slightly long, so I loaded up the mag until the follower stopped moving (usually 6-7 rounds in a 10 round mag) inserted it into the receiver till it locked, dropped the bolt and proceeded to pull the trigger until the mag was empty

While I would very much like to, I am unable to tell you anything further about the pictured rifle as a very good friend of mine insisted I sell it to him!!

Fortunately I have another builders set in the bin!!

Thank you for taking the time to read my post, I look forward to any and all constructive comments or thoughts you all might have, and will do my best to field any questions you might have.

Warmest regards

AbH

@Ustauk:

You are most welcome!!

As a community now more than ever we need to stick together and share information!!

Very nice to see.
Nicer to hear it works so well the first time out with a non-adjustable gas block.
Mind you do have some pretty fancy handloads and that Hubble telescope combined,,,.
I hope it and mine, work just as easily with regular bulk for the hoi polloi like me.

Some additional feedback for your perusal in the Black and Green build thread , https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/2160771-Jard-Sylvestre-J180-Info-Feedback-and-Builds , and the Sylvestre build thread, https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/2206810-Jard-J180-Builds .

@ lawn gnome

Well thank you for the kind words!!

I don't know if I would call those reloads fancy, but they have become my "go-to" Load.

I developed that reload back when we were still able to take our Ar's to the range. I found that H4895 has and excellent burn rate and pressure curve the worked very well with both large and small framed semi-autos.

I think that one of the most important things after barrel nut tension and gas block/port alignment is proper lubrication.

I have found that most semi-autos that work with direct impingement/gas bleed off work best when "wet".

I like to use G96 in an aerosol can and Dillan's blue grease in a syringe, however any light grease that stays where you put it will work!!

I hope that helps!!

@ uAJollyRogering

Hello there !

That muzzle treatment came from TNA and they literally called it their " Classy Shrouded Muzzle Brake" or at least that is what was detailed on my invoice.

I am very much a fan of muzzle breaks with shrouds as I like to shoot indoors, especially when testing rifles!!

Unfortunately I no longer see that muzzle treatment on their website, but they do offer a few others that may fit the bill.

Models like the Dissipator, Vortex and Tactical Muzzle breaks are all available with removable shrouds

Hope that helps

Hello all!!

It has been some time since I updated this thread, and thought you all might be interested in an update.

Since my last report I have changed the barrel on this rifle (some one just absolutely had to have the previous MRA 18.6" barrel).

In the mean time I was able to get my hands on a Bear Creek Arsenal barrel.

It look as follows:

Um4wjbT.jpg

Its a really nice 20" Hbar profile barrel with spiral fluting, made out of stainless with Nitride finish chambered in 223 Wylde with a 1-8 Twist

Further I also change the gas block to a Superlative Arms adjustable gas block that is made out of stainless steel and black nitride coated. In my opinion these are one of the best gas block avaiable.

They are click adjustable and allows one to keep track of the exact setting when you find it!!

This was an important change to my way of thinking. In an AR-15 is you want to slow/manage the cycle time you can:

-uses a heavier buffer
-change the recoil spring
-add a heavier BCG
-Add and adjustable gas block to control the amount of gas through the system.

In the Jard J180 the only way to regulate the cycle time is to control the gas flow.

I spoke to Dean (the owner of Jard) directly and when they build complete rifles this is how they do it, with the gas flow adjusted to the minimum point that allows proper functioning and gentile cycling of the action.

So here are a few pictures of the complete build:

For those that are interested the specs of the Mark2 rifle are as follows:

Specs as follows:

  • J180 Builder Kit
  • A-2 Flash hider with Crush washer
  • Bear Creek Arsenal 20" Hbar profile barrel with spiral fluting, made out of stainless with Nitride finish 223 Wylde chamber 1-8 Twist
  • Superlative arms Low profile adjustable gas block - Stainless Steel with a nitride finish 0.750 spec
  • Stainless Rifle length Gas-tube with pin
  • MRA V2 M-LOK AR-15 Hand guard - 13.5", Anodized Black
  • Standard A-2 Grip
  • CNA new Carbine Buffer Tube with Lock Ring
  • Luth MBA-4 carbine stock with cheek riser
  • 10 round LAR Mag

Range trip

Well it was finally time to take my updated build (Lets call it Jard #1 J180 Rifle - Mark 2 configuration) to the range for live fire testing.

I thought a lot about the ammo I wanted to use. In the first installment I used reloads, however I thought this time it was very important that I use some commonly available factory.

I settled on American Eagle Federal American Eagle-XM. This is basically commercially available ball that is easy to find. I thought 40 rounds would be a good sample size Picture of the ammo below

The following are a couple of the obligatory bench set up pictures.

0p6nLR1.jpg

All shooting was done @ 48 yards (the farthest distance for my indoor range)

After sight in I shot the following three shot groups from a cold barrel.

gOOnVjb.jpg

o4bGKGp.jpg

Federal AE-XM is not really known for accuracy, so over all I was quite pleased.

I settled in for a few more 5 shot groups on a 4-Face target. The following are the results.

GpcuBoC.jpg

The rifle functioned and shot very well!! The first two cold bore groups of three were quite excellent, and things started to spread a little as the barrel heated up.

Remember this barrel prior to testing was brand new, so I feel there is still time for it to break in.

As this point the barrel has 40 rounds on it and receiver now has 140 rounds on it.

Over all I am very Pleased with the results and looking forward to working further with this rifle.

Well that is it for now.

I will do my best to field any questions you might have.

Thanks for taking the time to read my post.

Welll thank you for the kind words, they are very much appreciated!!

I have done some more research, had two really interesting telephone conversations with Dean Van Marel (owner of Jard).

As I now have a better understanding of how the gas systems of these rifles interact with the recoil system I am going to tweak the rifles a bit more which I belive will enhance reliability and make the J180 less particular about its ammunition.

I hope to have some time to work on this over the weekend and will then post my results here.

Thanks for the update, cool to hear the Jard owner actually talks to his customers! Please let the guys at Sylvestre know how your adjustments went; the are intending to build some full rifles with MRA barrels, if they barrels ever arrive; MRA keeps delaying them, currently three weeks before they ship to Sylvestre.

I'ld like to hear about your plans here.

I know that when I bought the Jard 48s, the first thing I did was to put an adjustable gas block on them. First thing I ordered when I ordered the Jard180 kits again.

I am sure firms that charge substantial money for complete rifles should have their ducks in a row and will have done their own R&D on reliablity and functionality.

Failure to do so will end up in an "NEA of old" like situation which is simply a catastrophe for the consumer and business alike!!

Futher I am sure that they should not require assistance or need free advice from a hobbiest such as myself, that is what they pay their staff for!!

As for MRA delays in barrel supply, they seem to have been struggling with this for some time, as evidenced by there lack of barrels forsale on their web site.

Respetfully I am unsure if they are struggling with supply chain issues or if there is simply a bottle neck in their manufacturing procseess.

That being said I seem to have no issue finding barrels and I am neither a manufacturer or whole saler.... (shrug)

I would however appreciate if Sylvester could get theri ducks in a row figure out a definate time line as to when recoil system parts and complete bolt assemblies will be available!!

I would really like th build a 6.5 Grendel on a J180 but need a bolt assembly with the larger face to do so and have no desire to shell out another $1,400 (after tax and high priced shipping) for another complete receiver set.

I had a Jard J48.

It was a decent rifle but had a proprietary way of barrel installation, and you were stuck with a good barrel that only had a 1-10 twist and an unthreaded muzzle!!

Honestly I much prefer the J180 platform"'

ng1gaiq.jpg

The big deal is that it is compatable with standard AR-15 barrels!!

I agree, a really good repeatable adjustable gas block is a must on these Jard rifles!!

I prefer the Superlative Arms set screw adjustable gas blocks. They are click adjustable and totaly repeatable.

5YCCELq.jpg

A good muzzle treatment like a linear comp that will increase gas dwell time is a good idea as well.

Though harder to find, I am a big fan of the Kaw Valley Linear comp:

Spent some time last night working on an MRA Maverick project and hope to have some time to work on one of my Jard J180 projects this weekend as well.

Will do my best to keep you in the loop.

Well I have rattled on long enough.

Be well and hope to have new things to report soon
