If a fellow were sitting around one Fine Sunday afternoon, lusting over fancy rifles and decided to build one, what should he build?

Now this would be a semi custom. You could pick the action, barrel, trigger, stock, mount's and scope. The only stipulation is, no common cartridges. Also, the cartridge must be a short action. No .30-06, .270, 7mm-08, .308 or 6.5x55. Somthing that you always thought was cool, completely obsolete and a pain to find brass for. Cartridges like the old 257 Roberts, .260 or .338 Federal would be considered exotic enough, as few rifles are made in these. I'm just tired of hearing how the .30-06 is Gods answer to everything. And everyone knows already you just have to have a 6.5x55. Let's debate about interesting rifles.

I think if I could put one together, I would select a stainless model 700 short action. I would like the action coated in teflon or similar material. A stainless barrel cut to 22 inches, and maybe fluted and left in the white. As much as I love wood stocks, a rifle like this would beg to be used. Therefore I would select a high quality synthetic. Probably a McMillan. But in a standard sporter style with a nicely fluted, straight comb. Since my rifle has no sights, nor will I change scopes, fixed mounts will ride atop. I like the Leupold Dual dovetail, and it would still look nice. The scope will also be a Leupold. A fixed 6 power would be plenty, but a 3.5-10x40mm would probably get the vote. And as for a cartridge? In this era of high tech wonder rounds, I think somthing like the .250-3000 would be about as sensable a cartridge as I could pick, since this rifle would be used alot.

What would you put together?

Alright I'll give this a shot:

I'd go with a Win70 Short action. Light sporter contour SS barrel with a teflon coating. Probably go with a 24" barrel. Hinged floor plate. I'm not sure about the what stock I would choose but probably would go with something similar to the JRS laminate. Caliber would be the 250AI, though I'm not sure if that's strange enough. Second choice would be a 244H&H Magnum. If I get to be ridiculous on the price of the scope then a Zeiss Victory Varipoint 2.5-10X42 T would go on top of some medium rings, probably my favorite Burris Signature Series steel rings on some redfield bases.

Oh and as for the trigger. I like the winchester trigger. I'd just get a smith to tune it to about 3 lbs and all would be good.

700 Rem action
Kreiger 26" turned down to a medium weight or fluted
22/250AI or 243AI or 6/284
(already have a 22/284)
4-14 Leopold
Once all that's put together we fit a fancy grade walnut stock to me and it;)
Parkerized

Leupold FXIII 6x42mm
Talley Low Rings
McMillan hunter's Edge Stock
Rem 700 ti or rem mod 7
GreTan pin & Shroud
24" mtn countour stainless barrel

.257 Roberts AI

you won't squeeze the bob into a model 7.;)

Mine would be a M70
22" fluted SS
McMillan edge
VX3-2.5-8x
Talleys

I've always wondered about a lite weight .27-08.

Model 7 SS, scalloped, bolt fluted and skeletonized
Lonewolf summit XL kevlar stock
titanium firing pin
Aluminum shroud
Talley rings
3-9x33 VX-II ultralite scope
Douglas 20" #1 contour stainless barrel, w/ shallow flutes

25-08 AI, oh yeah baby

Sako 75 or 85 Sporter stainless w/walnut stock, rebarreled to .257 Roberts, factory contour barrel. Sako rings and a Leupold VXIII 2.5-8X. Not really exotic, but a heck of a deer rifle for a guy who generally hunts within a mile of the truck.

700 short action stainless
23" stainless fluted barrel in 6.5-284 (1:8 twist)
McMillan mtn rifle stock
Talley lightweights
Leupold FXIII 6x42 with LR duplex

140 grain Interlocks for practice, 140 Partitions for killing, and 140 MatchKings for play

Hmmm...... A nice lightweight "stalking rifle", say in 6.5x54 or 6.5x53, Turkish walnut stock with a schnabel forend, hand-rubbed oil finish, Mannlicher-Schönauer action (or maybe a Krag), swamped barrel (octagonal-round), with proper open sights and a side mount…

Next Sunday afternoon, probably something different.

416 Weatherby :)

I'm thinking a Montana barrel and action, heavy contour sporter barrel, grey laminate stock, muzzle brake, :) and the whole thing parkerized a nice flat grey.

as for a scope, I'll have to think about that a bit more.

Montana Rifleman

Anyone have, or have built a rifle from the Montana Rifleman 1999 action or barrelled action?

Looking at possibly having one done, as there is an importer in the Lower Mainland....

You don't need to know what I want to do. I asked you what you would build if you were going to order one this very minute. Nothing serious about this thread, just for fun.

In that case I wouldn't build anything as I have all the bases covered. Varmint, big game, bigger game, long range and bush guns, I have them all already.

That was fun. I'm serious. :)
