9mm Bayard

A friend of mine just showed me an interesting item. Not exactly my type of a handgun but it definately looks like a 'goodie'. It looks similar to a Broomhandle Mauser, a Bergmann's patent and I believe it is a 9mm Bayard Long or 9mm Bergmann-Bayard Long caliber. I believe it was handed down from his Grandfather and while he doesn't want to shoot it on a regular basis, he'd like to put the odd round through it. Question, is it possible or adviseable to shoot present day standard 9mm ammo through it? Anyone know?

IIRC you can make the brass by shortening .38 Super brass. The Ctgs of the World book will give you load data that should be safe for that old beauty.

Edit... got it confused with the 9mm Browning long ctg.... you can make that from shortened .38 ACP/Super brass. The 9mm Bayard case is .001" longer than .38 ACP/Super brass. And apparently pistols such as the Astra in 9mm Bayard will actually chamber and fire .38 ACP in them. This might be possible with the pistol you describe, if the ctg would feed/chamber. The .38 ACP/Super casing is larger on the base than the 9mm Bayard case though so the base might have to be trimmed back a tad, too. I would only try the older .38 ACP loads, though and not the more powerfully loaded .38 Super ctgs. I doubt that standard 9mm Luger would chamber/fire as the casing is substantially shorter than the 9mm Bayard case. There would be an issue of "headspace".

Thanks for the info guy. Yes, I did check out that source of and that's why I asked about using standard 9mm. Between 9mm Luger and 9mm Bayard, the main difference is the 9mm B brass is 0.156" longer and the C.O.L. of the 9mm B is 0.160" longer, so, would 9mm Luger work through it? If I reload for him, using 9mm Luger cases and extend the bullet out to the 9mm B C.O.L., would that work? I'm guessing it might as CTG. of The World states, "Standard loads for the 9mm Luger or the 38 Colt Automatic will work fine in these pistols". I was just wondering if standard 9mm ammo that's available would work, as is.
I was just up looking at it again a short while ago and it is a beauty and in mint condition. There's even a matching serial # on the inside of the grips. Oh, I'm still not certain of, as/the 'Blue Book Of Gun Values, of exactly which model it is. The serial # mid 8000 level. I haven't checked out the proof marks aspect yet.

You could try it to see if it will feed/chamber.... but there may be a "headspace" issue if the cartridge is meant to headspace on the case mouth. The 9mm Luger case would be too short for that. It might then be that only the extractor holds the casing in the chamber with the shorter case of the 9mm Luger. But the other case dimensions might also not be compatible with the chamber of the pistol that you want to use it in.
