Visiting with my son yesterday. Inside sources say there are a half dozen new Fish Cops locally, SE AB being local in my world.
Don't be bumping around a field with a .22, shooting gophers out of a truck, on a quad or out of a tractor.
They are gonna save the world, LoL.

I was under the impression that it was “no hunting” from a vehicle. Shooting gophers is pest control so the vehicle restriction does not apply.

Can someone point me to the legislation or policy that provides clarity on this? I have not found it to date. Thanks

Check your provincial wildlife act. In BC it is illegal to discharge a firearm from a motor vehicle.

Use of conveyance
27 (1)A person who discharges a firearm or wounds or kills wildlife from a motor vehicle or from a boat that is propelled by a motor commits an offence.

From the AB Wildlife Act:

Use of vehicles, boats and aircraft
33(1) A person shall not
(a) hunt wildlife from or with an aircraft,
(b) use a vehicle, aircraft or boat with intent to harass, injure
or kill wildlife,
(c) discharge a weapon from a vehicle, aircraft or boat, other
than a boat that is propelled by muscular power or
anchored, or
(d) have a loaded firearm on or in a vehicle, aircraft or boat,
other than a boat so propelled or anchored.
(2) Subsection (1) does not apply to an activity that is specifically
authorized by or under a licence authorizing the control of wildlife
depredation or the collection of wildlife.

So unless Subsection 2 applies to you, its no bueno.

I wouldn't try anything on wheels til the new one's get their cherries good and popped.
Unless you're a bored lawyer whom has all ducks in a row prior to.
Even then, you vanquish a new F & W Sheriff in court ( Sheriff not used in an official sense)... he's gonna remember that come hunting season.
Why make enemies who can make your life miserable?

Attended a meeting with the local Fish Cops a couple of weeks ago. The lament was they're short staffed in the field, office not so. the usual government thing. He said they were hiring.

Grizz

So, in the case of gopher/pest control - are gophers legally considered wildlife? they are typically regarded as pest/vermin so I am genuinely curious how this law may be applied in the heart of Alberta Cattle Country where gopher eradication is a high priority....

Pest control is no different than hunting game animals or birds or target shooting when it comes to discharging a firearm from a vehicle.

I'm gonna be glad I'm a hunter that just 'Walks North' in Deer Season. Not that I color outside the lines...but still better to not deal with any LEO when I've a firearm on me...heard enough stories of their lack of Familiarity with Actual law considering firearms.
They generally have their poop in a group as far as wildlife / hunting laws. But some of the more obscure regulations on FA...'best to not test'.
The sums up the 'Antique Firearms' group of Regs in a nutshell...'best to not test'.

Well it says you can't discharge from a vehicle. And you can't have a loaded gun in a vehicle. Neither of those are specific to hunting situations - a) and b) are wildlife specific but not c) and d).

I actually kind of like the trailer and picnic table idea... throw a patio umbrella in there too. Some good glass on a decent 22...be a great time.
