Thoughts from Renegade owners?

Been diggin the build threads etc but hoping to hear a bit more about what Renegade owners think of their purchase, especially longer term owners. Still liking it, and no problems? Issues that need to be known, etc?

I already have bolt action rifles, but they look pretty handy and fun, and the feel of an AR and the sights etc is cool.

Had mine for about a year and love it. Haven't experienced any issues or problems. I've heard that the new gen 2 ones have addressed some of the "nit-picky" criticisms by adding some features. No complaints here though.

If you have a parts AR (or multiple ARs) with a bunch of expensive components that you don't want to see go to waste, and all of the pieces to complete one, they do make some sense in that regard.

The design is daft with cleaning and servicing being a problem, as you need to disassemble/remove the buffer tube to take out the bolt group.
Otherwise, you are cleaning the barrel with the bolt assembly in the upper.

To purchase AR parts and the receivers to build and have one, or buy a fully completed one? No way - go buy a decent bolt action rifle.

I have a MKII. I love the concept, playing dress up with it, and all the fun other things you could with an AR in terms of set up. Having said that, I've only shot mine once. It was fun, but obviously not fun enough because I keep passing it up when I reach into the safe before heading to range. I'll definitely keep it around, but it's far from my go-to rifle.

It really depends on your style of shooting.

If you normally take slow and accurate long-distance shots; It's really no different than shooting an actual AR.
But if you're really into rapid fire; You're going to be disappointed.

One huge upside is that it's non-restricted regardless of barrel length.
So you don't have that ridiculously long barrel that NR semi-autos are forced to have.

I wonder if many people who didn't have an AR before bought these? I would be all over this platform if I had a bunch of parts to throw at it, but I hesitated on finishing my AR and never got started on an upper build.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking...

But I see where Beltfed is coming from too with just buying a bolt action. The plug and play nature of AR parts is cool. Sights, accessories etc but its paying a lot for a "cool" bolt action.

Guess we *are* Gunnutz though.

I built mine without scavenging from an AR.

There are primarily two benefits that work in tandem: Modern ergonomics and being able to hit that 26" OAL

If that fits with what you want then it's a solid rifle. I like mine a lot.

If you have an AR it's a no brainer to get one and put your parts on it to have a legal useable firearm.
I love that I can have my 10.5" 300blk as a non restricted firearm now.
When we get to use our ARs again I'm going to keep this renegade as is and rebuild my AR with other parts.

If removing the buffer tube is too onerous to cleaning, or you want to use a folding stock with a longer barrel on a precision build, and don't mind not having the buffer spring act as a return assist, you may want to consider a SBI Light Practical Carbine. I haven't heard anything negative about the LPC, except the lack of spring return may cause some issues with extraction of some 7.62x39 mm rounds. SBI still have LPC receiver sets in stock.

hmmm...I think I want significant forward spring pressure holding the bolt into battery on a round that is about to to be touched off.

Unless I am wildly misunderstanding the design, they are both locked breech guns so the spring pressure means nothing, as the locking lugs support the case not the spring?

I built one primarily for the cool factor “AR look”. But after a while, I realize that it has more than just the cool factor….I’m finding that it’s pretty accurate and very light. For me it will be more than just a plinking rifle but a hunting rifle as well. Have fun!

I’ve been on the fence about getting either one of these or an LPC…but the sample of exactly one MRA I shot seemed hitchy and sproingy in operation. One thing to note was that I only got to shoot steel case Barnaul and the barrel was from a budget AR.

Are these rifles smooth and fast to run with a barrel with a nice chamber and brass cased 223?

I've been seriously on the fence with these new straight pulls.
Initially i thought I might get a Maverick but looking at the receiver set price ..... I just don't know
Then I think about the Renegade and .223 just doesn't do it for me..... I would want to go with the largest caliber possible and here is where my knowledge is thin.
Has anyone built an over bore on one of these Renegades yet? and I don't mean 7.62x39 , I'm thinking like 6.8rem or 458socom?

You’re fighting a design where primary extraction is almost non existent. From all the info I can glean on these straight pull AR15 the extraction gets hitchy and sticky the further away you get from the original .223 case.

This might be a stupid question but does the bolt camming/wanting to rotate as you try to pull the handle backward count as primary extraction?

It might but without any type of mechanical advantage like a bolt handle or lever action.
I don’t own one of these straight pulls and I am here to learn as well.

I built one in .458 Socom, one in .223 Wylde and a Maverick in .338 Federal
