What do you prefer on you 5.56 semis, an LPVO or a holo/red dot + magnifier?

I'll be ordering an X95 in the next week or so and can not make up my mind. I have experience with LPVO's but not the other option. I am specifically looking at the Eotech HHS with G33 magnifier vs a Vortex strike eagle or something similar.

Looking for durability but I also want to be able to reach out to 200-300m accurately.

As far as LPVO’s go in my experience anything below about a bushnell SMRS is quite lacking and compromised in order to reach a certain price point. I’d certainly recommend take a look through on of those if you haven’t already.

Depends what size targets you're wanting to hit at 2-300m. Smaller targets, go LPVO for sure. That being said, I'd rather have a high end red dot and magnifier like the eotech combo you mentioned than a lower end LPVO like a Strike Eagle. The "2 dot" Eotech reticle (upper dot for 50/200 zero, lower for 500) gives you a bit more flexibility, imo, with a magnifier. The aforementioned Bushnell SMRS (both 1-6 and 1-8) are nice optics as are the Vortex Viper 1-6 and (preferably) Razor 1-6 and 1-10.

I'm realistic as to what the x95 is capable of. I'd be happy hitting a 10" target at 300m consistently but also want something that is quick to aim short range. The Bushnell SMRS seems to be around the same price as the Eotech combo so I'll have to put some thought into it.

Anyone have experience with the Eotech Vudu?

If you're thinking about a LPVO, I suggest getting one with daylight bright illumination. You can use them essentially like a red dot at 1x for close up shooting, and still have the zoom for longer distances.
The gen 2 Vortex PST 1-6 has daylight bright illumination, as do the Razors.

Well I would say What are your missions ROE's? if you are an "assaulter" then I suspect the RDS & magnifier "combo" would be ideal, using the RDS for CQB, and then the magnifier for longer "aimed" shots. If your primary role is "patrolling" then I suspect the LPVO is ideal for observation and "longer" engagements? YMMV Good Luck.

I switched from an LPVO to a holographic and magnifier combo a while ago, but 99% of my shooting is within 100m, which I am pretty comfortable shooting with just a holographic. My reason was that I only used either the minimum or maximum magnification on my LPVO, and the 1x on a LPVO isn't truly 1x in my opinion. Plus it had a limited field of view, and a set parallax as opposed to a holographic. Plus, most modern magnifiers have QD mounts, so when not in use it can be taken off when not in use. That being said, I do believe there is a newer Vortex Strike Eagle that is FFP, which seems like a cool feature. For reference I use Vortex AMG's, one with a 3x Vortex Micro and one with a 6x Vortex magnifier.

im running holo+ magnifier, i like having the ability to QD the mag and just toss it in my bag/PC. I only shoot 0-150 and with the combo im hitting IPSC targets, groupings aren't the greatest but the X95 isn't built for accuracy

Lmao at x95 reaching out to 300m accurately

Agreed about the magnification, I have a Leupold Freedom vx that is properly marked as 1.5-4X. The glass is nice but I'm looking for something that will take a beating and with an illuminated reticle.
How does the Vortex AMG compare to the Eotech?

One of the things I'll do with a new carbine is pull a big magnified optic off one of my bolt guns and put it on to do accuracy testing (with factory ammo) and work up a load. How well it shoots will help determine what optic goes on it. Realistically though you should hammer out exactly what you want to use the rifle for. Range use, fast up close and large-ish targets out to 300, Eotech and a magnifier are probably your best bet. Keep the magnifier off until you need it. If you want to use it to hunt though (being NR) I'd probably go for an LPVO, mostly to use the higher mag for better PID (does that buck have spikes?). If you're worried about the LPVO being slower than the Eotech (it shouldn't be much slower if you train with it) you can also offset a red dot at 45 degrees for closer work, that's how I run my carbine. LPVO on top, zeroed at 100 yds, can dial or hold for further shots (or just dial on MPBR) and an offset Aimpoint micro at 45 zeroed at 50 yds.

My primary hinderance with the LPVO system is the eye-box, a tube requires specific parameters for use. Because of this, I much prefer a holo. You cant beat a holo at close range with two eyes open. Long range is far more forgiving, thus a dot will do fine. There exist great advantages for LPVO’s past 300m. However the more diverse system is the EOtech personally.

It’s 3-4 moa at 100, so yes at 300 it’ll be 9-12 inches or there abouts

Yeah, it's optimistic, but maybe not impossible. Plus bullpups can be kinda hard to shoot off of a bench. Then also any bit of wind on those little 22 bullets...

No reason he can't use a larger plate if he really wants to go to 300m and still have a good time.

But this thread is about the optic choice: The two given options would be for very, very different applications in my mind. If mostly CQB, then the RDS is the clear winner. Might be smart to try both and keep one (or keep both!).

If the shooting you're doing is predominately 300m + I would recommend an LPVO, with perhaps a canted red dot for the close up 30-50m shots.
