Savage Model 340 E 22 Hornet

I had one in 222, sold it because of the slow twist of the barrel, replaced it with a fast twist 223 that can handle heavier bullets. I also recently inherited my Dad's 340 in 30-30 , I will be hanging on to that one.

I have owned several 340's in the past, two in .222rem and one in 30/30. "Decent " accuracy, nothing stellar, terrible triggers, sheet metal magazines, not thhe sstrobngest bolt locking sysstem.
They were however, good guns for knocking around with around the barn , or to keep in a truck.

How does it shoot RJ?

Hi Bucky I just got it yesterday - took it apart for a GOOD cleaning and to see about AJUSTING ?? the trigger as its a bit Pull HEAVY ! Play with it today and will be out to the range this week . I did get a Weaver side mount system with it and i have a older Weaver 1.5-3 Scope to mount up . I'm not expecting MOA accuracy out of it nor will it be needed for shots to around 100 yards . RJ

I have 75 Hornady Factory 35 gr VMAX ammo i got at the gun show and i ordered in a pack of Prvi Hornet brass and some Prvi 45 gr Hornet bullets from Henry at Budget - I have Lil Gun - H110 - 2400 - 4227 powders and more so im g.ood there for reloading !

My uncle carried a 340 in triple duece on the trap line for many years.
When I last saw it the finish was gone completely but I’m sure it had paid it’s way in coyote pelts a hundred times over.
If I recall correctly it had a Weaver straight 4X just as worn as the rest of the rig.
Truck gun/sled gun it served exceptionally well.

All of mine would shoot five into 1MOA at 100 yards pretty regularly.

Hi all
I have a small collection of .22 Hornets.
Stevens 322A, Savage 342A and a Savage 340C. I currently use them for Gophers and the occasional badgers.
I hadn’t seen one in the Savage 340 E series only in .222 so good info there. Anyone have a series E in 30-30, I haven’t seen one of those either.
I really like these little rifles, great bush guns for deer in 30-30. Does anyone have one in .223 from the factory?
I’ve looked for one at lots of shows, but never seen one, only know that they made them from advertising.
I have seen them rebarreled into 32 special and I was planning to rebarrel one into 38-55. Probably just a single shot for fun at the range. You know a PLAN ( something to base your changes on!”) lol
Some good reading on these rifles is on Leeroy Wisners site “Leeroy’s Ramblings “ look under the heading “Firearms Related” highly readable and excellent info.
Stay healthy all

I currently have a 340D in 222, very good condition, metal and blueing look like new. Someone removed the sights.

I've owned Model D and E in .225 Winchester as well as 1 22 Hornet, and a number of 30-30's.

I saw 1 in .223 but it was years ago and do not remember the model.

They are crappy guns only popular because of the non mainstream chamberings of 22hornet and 30-30. I have one in 22hornet. It has the conflicting features of a heavy barrel for long range shooting, a single action screw with barrel band to hold on the stock and a two peice side mounted scope setup. Any budget rifle I’ve handle has been better thought out than model 340’s

I just got my self one in 222, going to put a peep sight on the rear and use it as a brush beater for coyotes. I used one in 30-30 moose hunting for a few years, it’s a get the job done rifle with no frills. Works for what it is.

Thanks for your input. I’ve only ever seen the the 340V in 225, no other caliber!? If anyone has one in in 225 in the D or E series I would love to know. Anyone know the Stevens 830 was built in 225 or the CIL 840? I have a Stevens in 30-30 and the CIL in 222 and 30-30.
Matgoulding, can I ask what series your .222 is and did it come with the factory peep rear sight ?
