I cannot seem to find any solid info on the topic. Figured the folks here could help. I have little experience in the dangerous game/ large bore realm. I am not super worried about factory ammo options as I handload. Let me know, what you know!

1) is there any non belted .458 magnum cartridges

2) are there commercial rifles made in said cartridges that don't cost an arm and a leg. Lets say sub 3000

3) if not any bolt guns/ or suitable donar rifles vs. The traditional sxs generally used by dangerous game hunters.

4) if you have another option instead of the .458 please feel free to share. would rather have the accessibility of components if it meant a different diameter

I am aware that I don't need such a cartridge or rifle but I want one, or atleast interested in the information. It is the only genre of rifle I currently don't own, but still want. I have experience with magnums and don't mind the recoil. But I want something that kicks like a scared steer...

Thanks folks, have a gooder'

Non of us need many of the guns we have but a 458 mag comes in handy if we ever have a charging something to stop. I have one too just in case.

A great choice for a non-belted .458 magnum equivalent cartridge is the 450 Alaskan chambered in Winchester Model 71 and newer 1886 Win builds. Based on an improved 348 Win case, it has more poop than needed for many, but the 450 was the go-to dangerous critter dumper for many years up north and for good reason.

Just curious why you prefer beltless over belted?

I have had issues in the past with full length resizing belted cartridges. I find it creates issues with head spacing after a few reloads. Mind you at the point of me owning belted magnums I had some cheaper brass. So I now prefer non belted cartridges and have not had an issue since. Plus I think aesthetically they look better. Good question though, thanks.

45 PRC, all you need is a barrel and a reamer, short of that everything that doesn't have a belt in a heavy hitter, has a rim

Interesting. I'm not sure how a belted straight walled case like the 458 Winchester or Lott could develop a headspace problem. Really, it's difficult to imagine it for anything unless you're actually not hitting the shoulder when you're FL sizing.

Ruger (& others) did a great job at marketing beltless cases. Lots of folks bought into the pitch.

while i do like the 375hh i did find as a lefty that the 375 ruger alaskan with laminate stock was a great offer at the time and still. it wish it was offer in 375hh but it was not for left hand user.

If a person has the choice- and we have lots of choice these days- It makes no sense to go choose a belted cartridge over a non belted one. Unless it's one of the very few belted cartridges that actually require a belt for proper headspace.

Although not .458 caliber, some of the the most accessible non belted cartridges of larger diameter would be the 416 and 375 Ruger. OIf you must have a .458 and don't mind case forming and custom rifles then the 458 Ruger is an obvious choice.

I agree .... The beltless cases work just fine, but some folks think they are near magical compared to the older belted. In reality they both work very well. It's good to have a choice, but be realistic about the basis of what you choose. In your case you needed a LH 375 and got a very good one. :)

The OP should just buy a std 458WinMag. He would be well served with less hassle.

Beltless cases aren't magical, but in most cases they are a superior case design than their belted counterparts. This probably doesn't matter much to the average hunter who is buying factory ammo, though.

I would agree that the .458 WM is likely the easiest path to a .458 caliber bolt action rifle, but not everyone is looking to take that route.
