.223 build - Chassis vs stock, Rem700 vs Vanguard?

The laminates I like are the bench style stocks that Boyds put out, and similar. I have owned severall by small shop gunsmiths, and all were fantastic.
The grey one here is a Savage, I beleive it is supplied by Boyds for them.

If that is your accuracy expectation, why are you piecing together a selection of cast off parts and “go faster accessories” that will cost $4-$5K for a frankenrifle result? Call Insite Arms, or any other quality rifle builder, and get them to put together something. People like stocks vs chassis the same as blond vs brunette. They both are accurate, but the actual stocks take more expertise to set up.

There are a lot of people out there who get personal preference mixed up with truth!LOL
I have seen some super accurate chassis guns at our range , not all of them put together in proffesional shop either.
Tube and chassis guns have been around for a while and are anything but inaccurate .

Since the OP is asking about a building a bench rest rifle, for ultimate accuracy I don't think anything beats a properly stress free glass bedded action into a good stock.

Chassis work well, no doubt, and are likely to be an improvement over a factory stock.

Decades of benchrest records bears this out.
 
Semi-officially, I'm looking at the Grayboe line (Renegade/Ridgeback). Although I've never shouldered one, they look like they'll feel very similar to the sako S20 which I love the feel of. From what I understand, they are a high quality fiberglass stock, very comparable to the McMillans, but cheaper. I'll have it properly bedded.

I will freely admit... price and aesthetics are major considerations on this decision. Now... hopefully I can actually find one available in Canada!!

If anybody out there knows anything about the Grayboe that I should know before pulling the proverbial trigger... speak now, or forever hold your peace!! (especially don't tell me that I messed up after the fact!! hahah!)
 
I would definitely go stock over chassis, unless you have a bunch of accessories you need to attach. My current coyote rig is about 13 lbs and is a chassis rifle. I would trade that for a stock in seconds for one reason: The cold. shooting coyotes in -20C with a metal chassis sucks. There's no way around it. A stock, especially carbon fibre ones don't conduct the heat as efficiently so they don't freeze your hands off.

I would talk to the boys over at Insite regarding the foundation stocks. they are simply fantastic!
 
Thanks for the advice, all! The decision has been made. Grayboe Renegade arrived yesterday, and it feels great!

That's because Ryan McMillan runs Grayboe :) wanted more flexibility in his offerings. They are excellent stocks, I believe the Remington AWR came with one from the factory.

I really want to put something into a Trekker. And I do believe I might put my Rem 700 .223 into a Renegade when I rebarrel it.
 
I’m having my friend build me a 223 for target shooting & coyotes. I’m going with an HS Precision LTR stock I got off the sale section on CGN. I looked at chassis options and may down the road switch to one. Goodluck on your build.

223 build will consist of:
- Remington 700 receiver
- IBI spiral fluted 24” barrel 1:7 twist
- trigger tech trigger
- wolfberg 20 MOA rail
- badger large bolt knob
- HS Precision LTR stock
