Why is Turkey Ammo so Expensive? And TSS Barrel Damage?

I recently bought some turkey shells and couldn’t help but notice how expensive many of them are. I know ammo nowadays is crazy, and premium buckshot or slugs are usually around $2 per shell, but some of these turkey shells work out to anywhere from around $3 to over $15 per shell! Is it the blend of shot and fancy wad that drives the cost up, or something else?

Also, the box of Federal Premium 3rd Degree TSS has a warning about TSS shot damaging some barrels. Is this more of a concern with tighter turkey chokes (similar to how they say slugs shouldn’t be used in tighter chokes)? I understand that tungsten is hard and dense, so can see how that could be an issue in theory. I’d be using this in a Benelli supernova, and I recall they have chrome lined barrels, but not sure about the included chokes or aftermarket specialty chokes. Haven’t bought any aftermarket chokes yet, as I was planning to see if the included full choke is “good enough”, but if any suggestions please share.

Not sure if this should be in the hunting forum…

Yeah those rounds really gobble at your bank account

Some of the blue grouse here in BC get big, like way bigger than roosters. They'll play chicken with your truck driving down the road, so sometimes you have to swerve to miss them. I stopped using a 22 to take them on the ground and switched to #5 copper plated shot from a 3 inch shell, and even sometimes that didn't work so I'm looking into a turkey choke but wow the prices aren't appetizing for ammunition

I would think its a lot of factors, fancy shot and fancy wad certainly being part of it. Another would be economy of scale - think of how many rounds of duck loads get bought and shot by the average hunter vs the number of turkey loads bought and shot by the average hunter.

As for the warning about the barrel, this is the first I've heard it mentioned. I wouldn't worry too much about it personally. My guess is thats lawyer talk - they're just limiting their liability just in case. If it was a real problem there would be talk about it on the internet by now I would think, as these shells have been on the market for at least a few seasons by now haven't they?

Not if the choke is designed for steel, also the wad is jn contact with the barrel. Never seen steel shot damage a barrle unless it was being used in an old gun with a fixed/wrong choke.

Show me a full constriction choke designed for steel - with a true full constriction. Most steel chokes are wad stripping or really a modified choke. Steel does damage barrels if you try to constrict it. I have seem many damaged…

Ive seen steel damage even an Improved Modified choke. Which is very close to the recommended modified.
