.284

I've been using the .280 for years and love it. I'd like a 7mm-08 if I ever get the urge for a featherweight rifle as my primary rifle.....short action, will take any game as big as I care to hunt. What's not to love. The 7 mags don't offer me enough performance gain over my beloved .280 to bother with. If I can't shoot it with the .280, I'm too far away.

I'm a 7x61 fan but I may be biased in the fact that this was the first rifle I ever hunted with if I had to own another 7mm it would be a 7x57 evrything else is much the same in different packaging with the exception of the stw on up which seems like unneeded offerings

got a 7mmRM that has some bedding issues, but I won't part with it, great rifle.

and I've been thinking that I need a 7-08 perhaps for the Wife. :)

Valentine's Day is comming up and what says I love you like a new rifle :D

I had a 280AI that shot well but never really fell for the rifle.
Took a while to decide what caliber would be next 7-08? 284win?
I decided to go 7mm Saum and I think I got the last new 700BDLSS in Canada last spring.Great caliber, with a little customizing the rifle weighs under 7.5lbs all up and shoots more accurate than I can.
2 275yd+ one shot kills last fall, whats not to love.RB

Doug, nice rifle. What did you do to it?
Rick.
I gave the rifle to Mitch Kendle for some of his handy work.
Gretan alum bolt shroud and firing pin assembly with bolt lugs lapped.
Bansner sheep hunter stock pillar and epoxy bedded.
I have a vintage ADL alum trigger guard on board from Rembo.
All stainless bead blasted with aluminum oxide.
Mick Mcphee lengthen the magbox,I went wyatt extended box to gain .15
This got me .005 from the lans with the 140gr bullets and freed up some room in the short case.
So far I am at 3135fps with 59.5gr H4350 and 140gr Baltips, could go more powder and still be accurate but thats fast enough.
Accubonds soon.RB

Thanks to all of you that have provided input.

Personally, I currently have a 7mm RM, a 7mm WSM, and a 7x57; the WSM is on hold pending a trade. My first centerfire rifle was a 7mm RM, and I have always held a bias toward this round. I enjoyed shooting the WSM, but there are other things that I want/ need, so it is an expendable asset. I will likely always have the 7x57, I like it that much.

I have no experience with the STW or Weatherby chamberings. Everything I've read indicates that there really is no appreciable advantage over the Remington Magnum, at least not for the type of hunting/ shooting that I'm involved in. I haven't fired a 7x61 or 7x64, and really haven't had much of an interest in either.

At times I have seriously considered adding a 280 Rem to my collection, and at other times a 7mm-08. Of course I have also considerd improved versions of both. In the end, I have always deduced that my Remington Magnum has always done exactly what I've required of it and the 280, desipte the laurels expressed by others, would be a backward step from the RM. The 7mm-08 also has a strong following that I cannot argue with. However, in my opinion, my eyes and ears are likely to fail me long before my knees and back will become a reason to switch to a rifle that is slightly lighter and shorter. So, the apparent advantages of the 7mm-08 over the 7x57 will likely not benefit me.

In some ways, this rationale is comforting, in others it is alarming. After all, it is nice to know that I have found merchandise that I am almost entirely happy with. Yet, formulating reasons to avoid trying new things seems contradictory to the idea of being a gun nut.
