.223 Shortage?

Hey guys,

Today was my first day out shooting in the New Year, fire some .22 and .223 and then stopped an my local gun shop to stock up on some .223 and .40 S&W. Well, didn't see any .223 so I asked him what's up, he said its been on order for 2~3 months, can't get it. From what he's heard, most of it is being shipped overseas.

I then stopped at Canadian Tire and Wal-Mart, nothing...

What's going on?

Reload your own, cast your own bullets, don't be a slave to the Ammo companies' artificial shortages. They have a shortage(wink,wink) and then they jack up the price.
 
Well, isn't that great...

But wait a second, the conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan didn't start yesterday, this has been going on for years. Why all of a sudden is all the .223 gone? I could find it everywhere this summer.

And if there's a market for it, why don't they ramp up production? I'm sure they could add another line or two or even another shift...

In NOV. Most of the supporting dealers had .223 in stock..
It's just a popular caliber..

-Bass Pro shops in toronto sold more than 30,000 rounds in a few days. a few months back, 2 weeks in a row, sold out.
-Marstar had .223 in stock a few months ago..
-leverarms.com has .223 ammo is stock
-wolverinesupplies.com has .223 in stock last time I check
-targetsports has .223 in stock
-frontiertaxidermy.com has .223 in stock

I've been buying the 40 round bulk packs of Winchester .223 to use in my Savage, mostly for the brass, but I haven't been able to find any recently. If you find a supply of it in the HRM, let me know!

Its not BS because every place I checked locally had nothing in stock and orders not being filled. I've never had to purchase ammo out of province except for JHP's in certain handgun calibers.

I was looking for the same Bulk Packs at Wal-Mart tonight, hit up Bayers Lake and Dartmouth Crossings, nothing... Me think I should buy a 22-250 because there's plenty of bulk packs for that caliber.

Meh, I shot ~500 rounds of .22 today along with about 100 rounds of .223, 100 rounds of 9mm and some shotty.
 
If memory serves me correct (please dont quote me) its gonna be around 299.00 per 1000-1100 shipped, plus tax(s) He is not 100% sure on the 'origin' or exact date of delivery but he is thinking the next few weeks

If that's the case, it might be worth waiting since Lever Arms for example wants $225 for 500 and Wolverine wants 231.75 for 500.

It would be used in my AR-15 and 700 SPS so 5.56 NATO should be fine.
 
I have mixed and matched 223/556 out of my 700P and Mini 14 / AR15A2 with nary a problem for many moons

Did wolverine up their pricefor 223 ammo? I could swear it was $196.00 for 500 and now its $235.00 for 500.
