Tip or not to tip

Hey folks looking for some insight on bullet selection. The past few years I've been using Barnes ttsx in almost everything. I have had great success and plan to use them for sometime to come. But I have heard some opinions on using bullets, especially monos, with polymer tips. The opinion is that the polymer tip, although giving you an aerodynamic edge lessens the expansion in comparison to the hydrostatic response of a hollow point or the maluability of a soft point. Has anyone done any tests, or have an experience that could back the plausibility of this opinion. I have not personally come across an issue with the ttsx, lrx, gmx, accubond, ect... all tipped bullets. With most my recent experience involving monolithic and having no issues I am wondering if others would share. 308, 270, 243, 300 mag being my common calibers.

Thanks for any and all information.... should I tip or not tip? That is the question.
 
I've used the original X bullet, tsx and ttsx. Not a huge number of kills, but i find the ttsx the most reliable. I believe the reason barnes added the tip was solely for more reliable expansion, not aerodynamics.
 
I've used almost all the Barnes variants and prefer the tipped ones. They will expand well, but so do the regular TSX as long as the hollow point doesn't get squished closed. Never happened to me but it has to some people.
 
And once again...( my version of "It's not a clip...it's a magazine!") it ain't 'hydrostatic'...it's 'hydrodynamic' if anything.
Using HP ( Hydrostatic Pressure) as a go to term is like using the word 'Unthawed'...just ain't right no how:bangHead:
Static is 'at rest'... anything about the results of a Boiler Room shot that says 'at rest'?
Looks like someone exploded a can of spaghetti sauce...that ain't 'At rest'
 
are expanding bullets required when making head shots? Don't worry, I practice at 75 yards and hunt out to 200, it's either a clean kill or a clean miss
 
The tipped version was brought out as mentioned for more reliable expansion. The hp version was well documented to sometimes get the nose closed on impact or get a piece of bone or hair plugging it and no expansion at all. There have been plenty of non-expanded barnes found in game, and every one I've seen have been the hp version. Have never seen a non-expanded tipped one recovered anywhere on any forum.

I don't know if they are...but I do know if all you take are head shots...need to work on that insecurity.
It's obvious to anyone but you...if you have to ask "Why?" in a retort...don't bother. Drink some Brown likker and ask an old friend...they will likely shoot it to you all square and gentle like.

Hydrostatic-relating to fluids at rest or to the pressures they exert or transmit. I believe hydrostatic shock relates to shock transmitted through a fluid at rest

And I'm not crazy about it...used the term myself for quite a spell. But it ain't an accurate term IMO
I haven't used the term hydrostatic shock for quite a spell, those whom know, definitely give you the 'side eye '.

I think it is accurate for the effect they are talking about. You can see it ripple through a shot animal on video. What about a hydrostatic transmission? You could argue against that term on a mechanics forum. I have no idea why they are called that
 
Animals I've shot and seen shot there is a visable difference in the body when hit by different designs. The wider and flatter the meplate the more visable the impact. This is the reason for my choice of round nose or flat nose if possible for hunting big game. For small game such as varmints and pests tipped bullets work well as the shots range further

Kinda like poking water with a stick or will smithing it with a paddle as an extreme image but if the bullet expands as intended it should work if placed thru the vitals no matter what shape it started

I'm guilty of not liking Barnes tsx because I've found/seen enough non expanded or petalless stubs in game. However most did manage to kill the host animal after some long runs while others were given a 2nd shot to finish

Don't forget the 3rd possibilty where you blow the lower jaw off.
In that case it really doesnt matter if it's an expanding bullet or a full patch metal.

I wish S&B sold the SPCE as components, maybe they do and I just can't find them, cut an entrance hole like waddcutters for continued bleed out, better BC then round or flat points, expand nicely.
