I seem to recall seeing a post about someone cutting down a barrel that was already fluted, trying to find that person or post/pictures.

If you know of them or have them please pm me.

Thx 7

Cutting down a fluted barrel is fine, just looks a bit funny. To make it look less funny you can chop it then thread the muzzle for a cap or a muzzle device.

I'm no engineer but would avoid opening the ends of the flutes. The cuts are stress risers and and even though the pressure at the muzzle is diminished it is still substantial .We have all seen bulges in the muzzles of rifles ,difference being the flutes will make it roll back like a banana peel .

I have seen very light barrels with substantial fluting peel right back to the chamber on firing factory ammo. The barrel maker was quite excited about that batch of barrels... This was 25 years ago...

I have also completely exposed the fluting on stainless heavy fluted barrels when shortening them and it worked just fine... if the barrel is of decent weight I would not worry about it.

Yes I agree, if there is sufficient material than it is not an issue .I was thinking only the sporters .Yes i remember a few Sako light weights that peeled open.
