I just wanted to follow-up on my original post earlier this year. If you recall, I asked the masses what the “best” 22lr rifle for my daughter’s high school rodeo shooting competition. I would like to thank each and every reply to my post - the input was greatly appreciated. After reviewing all the replies, there was 4 rifles that kept on getting repeated.
1. Tikka T1x
2. Anschutz
3. CZ457
4. Ruger Precision Rifle
After carefully researching all these rifles, I did the obvious thing that any father would do for their daughter…I bought them all! Our plan was to try them all and pick the best one. I thought a “tactical” style chassis would be the best option as it would give my daughter more adjustment options.
The Ruger Precision Rifle already came in a chassis like this so all good there.
I put the Tikka T1x with carbon fibre barrel (purchased from a great member from this site) into an Onyx chassis.
The CZ457 was also purchased from another great member from this site and came with a MDT chassis and Lilja barrel.
I purchased an Anschutz Model 64 with the original wood stock. This rifle was so nicely balanced that I did not do anything to it. It came with a 2 staged trigger and I set it to 11 oz….incredible shooter.
The CZ457 trigger was very heavy - I adjusted it to the lightest and was still the heaviest of all the rifles. I put in a Timney trigger and that solved everything.
The stock trigger in the Ruger and Tikka were very nice and nothing additional was needed for those.
So after lots of range time, the best grouping my daughter got was from the CZ457…the winner!!!
She had her competition last Friday and she didn’t do as good as she could have - her practice/range time groupings were better… maybe some nerves?? She did good enough to place top 4 and move onto National’s in Georgia!! We are planning our trip for the June 21 competition. I don’t think it’ll be possible to bring one of the rifles across the border as we don’t have enough time for the paperwork. We don’t know anyone in the US who has a 22lr so we are looking into renting a rifle at the range down there - it probably won’t be as nice as ours but it’ll still be a great experience for her.
