Mixing Powders ?

If it was Hodgdon RS and P, I'd say no problem as I've done it before while reducing the charge, but I would not mix "real" black powder with a bp sub.
Hodgdon RS is a BP substitute so it is OK and you have done it ?

It's probably best not to mix powders on purpose and I don't advise it. Again, I mixed 2 bp subs (both pyrodex) together by accident and survived, not blackpowder and pyrodex.
Take this with a grain of salt. An other shooter at my club is only able to get pyrodex and he mixes a small amount of black powder (2F) with it to use in a flinter. He uses it as an igniter to speed up the pyrodex. Talking to him he seams to be very safety conscious and careful. But he only uses a small bit of BP. So do at your own risk as I have have not don it my self.
Best way to blow up your gun and at the worse, injure yourself.
I have done it this way and seen old timers doing it too. It’s a good way of insuring good ignition with substitute powders.
.By memory (suspect!) the guys that were involved in hind legs shooting at 200 yards, used a duplex load not exceeding 10 percent of the full load, of smokeless powder under a main charge of BP. Pope made a powder measure that actually measure out the two different powders, for reloading on the firing line.
This was the guys like Pope and his peers, shooting Scheutzen (sp?), usually with cartridges loaded with powder on the firing line, and bullets that were seated over the powder charge by loading them from the muzzle, or breech seating them (pushing them in to the rifling at the chamber end of the barrel). Mostly, these guys were shooting 32-40, and similar.
By my reading, the use of 10 percent smokeless powder, had the advantage that the usual BP fouling was not an issue.
But, honestly, I'd be wary of dicking around with the BP subs, as they are still not in the same pressure curves as BP itself is.
