I have a Win 70 Extreme Weather in 270wsm that is getting up there in round count for the wsm. She still shoots good but I'm starting to consider what is next for this rifle down the road as not everything happens quickly in Canada. I would like to already have the next barrel in hand before it needs it.

I do enjoy the 270wsm but since it seems all the wsm's seem to be dying out should I consider something else? This is a deer, moose, black bear rifle.

If you can hit three shots into a 6 inch circle at 300 yards your still good for hunting. If you're already reloading for the caliber I would stick with it - if not perhaps look at the 257 Weatherby cartiridge.

The 257 Weatherby is a great round, but may be too long for that WSM action.
Personally, I would stick with the 270 WSM [or possibly go 7mm SAUM] Dave.

Yes, all she gets fed is reloads.

I should mention I also have a spare bolt with a standard bolt face.

Hi Dave, if I stayed with the 270wsm would a faster twist be a smarter move?

I mostly shot 130AB's but I think the 150 AB with .500 BC and the 160 partitions ate probably a better choice.

The only common WSM that I like is the 270, I used it for Mule Deer and it often seemed like too much gun, so probably depends on your intended use, you said you had a standard bolt so I might consider 7 08.

Ya, I bought the standard bolt for more options then the wsm bolt face. How would a 20" barrel in 7-08 shooting 160 partitions sound?

I’d go for an 8 twist 7mm WSM on that action. Or try out the 6.5 Prc

I am always interested in any 6.5's, what bolt face is used for it?

6.8 Western is basically identical to the .270 WSM with a much faster twist rate and factory ammo available with 175gr bullets.

Thanks for the input but I can order any twist I want on a new barrel and I do not shoot factory ammo in any rifle. I just don't see any advantages to switching to the same thing.

6.5 PRC is a magnum bolt face, it won’t require any alterations to your action.

I like the idea of a 350 rem mag or a 358 wsm as well (35 sambar)

I own a 270WSM it is a shooter and plenty of power for anything you mentioned, since you are set up for reloading the 270WSM I would stay with it with a faster twist barrel which would make it more versitile. IMO.

Another thought I had if I stay with the 270wsm is ordering a shorter tube, maybe 21" or 22". I'm not a long range hunter, 400 yards is my absolute max. I don't think I would be giving up to much by losing 2 or 3 inches.

I think a 22" would work well drop a couple oz., might jump a little more but should not be much. I find mine well balanced with a 24" but that varies rifle to rifle.

I'm running into the same problem with my M70 300 WSM Bill Leeper put together for me almost 20 years ago. At over 1700 rounds the first part of the barrel looks like some sort of old sewer pipe when viewed through a bore scope. Still, the Ron Smith barrel will hit a deer kill zone at 450 yards but it's not as super accurate as it used to be. It would be hard to change up this rifle though-I envisioned it as one of my selections of "do all" hunting rifles along with a .223 and .375 and the 300 WSM has been a mainstay for me on hunting trips all over BC on foot, truck, horses or planes, so lots of memories. I shot both my biggest blacktail and biggest moose with this rifle, plus a truck load of other game.

The 6.8 Western looks like a cool option but I've already got a nice M70 in 6.5 PRC so probably too close to bother with for me.

I guess it comes down to how far you want to shoot and what bullets you want to use. If you wanted to shoot heavier bullets like the 6.8 Western is designed for I'm sure you could get a barrel and throat set up to do so in 270 WSM. If you like the 6.5 PRC it's just a barrel swap. If you are going to swap bolts then the 7-08 is a great choice.
