Spitzer bullet in 30-30?

I've heard of guys that load regular pointed bullets in 30-30 ammo, and only load 2 rounds in the mag. The first one gets chambered, and you don't have a pointy tip sitting up against the lone remaining round in teh tube mag.

I haven't tried this; my M94 is 44Mag...

I have not tried that, but I will!! At some point, if only 150, 165 or 170 - even 180 left - then would be useful to have a "two shot" load worked up for the Winchester 94. But I would probably use up the spitzers in 308 Win or 30-06, instead of the Win 94.

My current attempt is about opposite - Speer Varmint - 110 grain Large Hollow Point - trying to make that work for the Win 94 - for stuff smaller than deer - and what I can connect with, with the aperture rear sight - something that is pretty new to me ...
 
I have been loading 150gr Hornady spitzers for over 20 years always worked well. One in the chamber and backed with 150 RN’s. Never needed a second shot. I picked up a couple of single shots that shot the Hornady’s very well but never seem to find a deer while hunting with them. I have tried the FTX’s but accuracy wasn’t as good. I only tried IMR3031 so another powder may work better.

I used to have a Rem 788 in 30-30. box mag. used to load up Nosler 150 gr BT bullets in it. Worked quite well, and I took more than a few whitetails with it. - dan

Me too! I've always hunted with high mag optics, this year I want to try the peeps on my sheep hunt for the novelty (and the weight).

I’m loading a Hornady 110 Grain PSP boooolit. This is out of my 336 BL laminated stock set…. Guide version, so 18 or so inches long ….

You can get away with round nose bullets in tubular mags and I know of one fellow that has been loading Speer Mag Tip bullets for at least 20 years and he shoot appx 100 rounds per year.

Round nose I can see but I guess it depends on the flat surface of the mag tip. Likely the open lead face is enough to keep it safe.
 
I have also used 180gr RN with 30gr of win 748 in a 94 no problem with pressure or expansion......like a .303 Savage [could probably boost that load a little]
 
I have a C.I.L. Model 830 [Rebranded Savage 340] which allows me to use pointed
bullets with impunity. The Hornady 150 grain FBSP spitzer works great, as does the
now-obsolete old style 150 grain Silvertip. These bullets shoot into 1¼ moa, so
I am going to take it deer hunting. Dave.
 
I have a 30/30 Savage 218 with a 24” barrel and got 2400 FPS with a cast 165 grn linotype over 28 grns of IMR 4198. Don’t remember the accuracy but it was completely adequate for hunting. Right now I’m experimenting with some 135 grn Hornady FTX as well as plinkers with 00 buckshot sized down to .309 (with 3 grns of 100NF ... with Dacron filler).
