Application mailed two months ago, worth a gamble ask friend to buy and hold for me?

So I did my restricted/non restricted back in March but didn't get everything in order until early April. The application was received by mid April according to mail tracking. I live in BC.

So a friend who did the course with me was just charged, he called and they said it will probably take another month. He submitted almost a month earlier than I did.

So I'm guessing that I would get my permit by August at the earliest. Which only gives me a month to make and finalize any kind of handgun purchase before the window is closed in October (most likely)

I have a clear list of what I am interested in (glock 48, glock 44, browning 1911 in 22lr/380 acp, and sig p320), but with everything out of stock and uncertain waitlists, I'm not sure that I will have enough time.

So I have a friend who is willing to be on the lookout for what I am looking for, make the purchase as long as I reimburse him. And by the time my permit comes down, he can transfer them to me. However, there is the chance that my permit doesn't come down in time, or that the transfer process takes too long and the bill is passed before then...I wouldn't ask him for my money back as a courtesy, so it would effectively be a free gun for him if the worst happens.

I guess what I'm trying to balance here is the risk of ending up with nothing and short a few grand, and the opportunity to be among the last Canadians to own a few handguns.

Right now I'm in a dilemma, just wanted to hear some thoughts and feedback from those who are more experienced than I in this matter.

Thanks!

Sorry - first thing that came to mind.
Bit of a crap shoot. No one on here has a crystal ball. In your shoes, I would be inclined to take your friend up on his offer and hope you get your paper work in time to get them transferred to your name. If Trudoofus manages to get the door slammed shut, before that happens - we can hope that Pollievre is made leader of the Cons and is able to form the next federal government. He's on record as being on the side of licensed gun owners. Lotta' ifs in there. Go with your gut.

I would say if you can spare the money then go for it. It is a risk, but think of how you would feel on this date next year if in fact the timing worked for you. Currently the timing seems to be the fall sitting for the bill to pass, and your RPAL could come in any day. I suppose if all failed, your buddy could also take you to the range as a guest to shoot his gun.

Thanks!

Hope for the best and plan for the worst

There is a reasonable chance that you get all your paperwork in time so i hope it works out!

If he's your friend then hopefully you can have a candid discussion with him.
is this a gun that he'd own at the right price?
e.g. if prices weren't silly and a deal came along would he have bought it for himself

if he answers yes then maybe you can agree on a plan B if everything goes sideways for you.

e.g. Gun normally goes for $800 but at $600 its a deal and buddy would have bought one. Its currently $1,000 because everything is stupid.

if paperwork doesn't come through, would he give you $600 for it? You are out $400 but that's the governments fault not your friends.

I can be your friend, let me know :)

seriously if I were your friend, I would do it if you ask.
And as a true friend I will refund you half if things go sideway.

So for you, I would say go for it.
