A 222 Remington

I have (4) .222 rems, all shoot, 50 gr Nosler Bt, In front of Win 748 powder WSR primers. This is by far the best gopher buster bullet I have found so far. Unfortunately this bullet is getting hard to find and expensive, may have to work up a new load down the road.

L46 with a med heavy barrel in a custom bench rest stock.
A1 Heavy barrel, totally original, beaver tail fore end stock.
Vixen action with sporter barrel, unfortunately some one ground off the iron sights but the gophers don't seem to mind. :)
And a original Anschutz with a sporter barrel.

They ALL shoot very well or should I say, they shoot like a typical .222 Remington's should. :)

I found the old Hornady SPSX works very well in the three rifles I’ve played with. They are very hard to find but a guy in another site has a lot of NOS for sale at $35/box

Rembo is being kind enough to post a pic of the first group that I ever shot with a bone stock Tikka T3. It was not the varmint model. This load was just a load I had made up for another rifle. I foolishly sold the rifle to another CGNer. After a long search I finally stumbled on another. Just waiting for the snow to leave to see if the new one shoots as well. Thanks Rick.

I first starting shooting groundhogs many years ago (when there were any) here with a 22 then graduated to a 22 magnum then went to a 22-250 then a 220 swift. An older gentleman I knew got me on to a 222 Remington in a 722 Remington. The others have long since been disposed of and so have the 722s and some other 222s also. I just love the cartridge. The ease of loading, finding an accurate load, cost of loading, being able to see hits and terminal performance with the 50 grain bullets puts a smile on my face. I have not shot a coyote with the Sierra Blitz but have with the Hornady 50gr SPSX and the Speer 50gr TNT. I found the SPSX to be more destructive. It is not hard to look like you know what you are doing when shooting a 222 Remington.

That’s a good summary.
The fun factor is high with the 222. Try some 40gr Hornady vMax Gerald. My favourite.

Pile of badgers, I’ve never seen more than 2 at one time. Shot the biggest boar I’ve seen last year. The 222 is one of my favs. 53gr match and 52gr match are my go to. The one gun I always feel good shooting. Lung shot coyote at 300 yds is a dead critter.

It might be a mom and 4 kits. I saw one with 3 but never 4. The .222 is more accurate than the .223 in my limited (4 rifles) experience.

Only two were shot together. They were young. The rest were singles no where near each other.

222/223? I’m not sure one is better then the other for a field varmint gun. Benchresters liked the 222 for a reason I presume. Both great cartridges ime.
