Potentially looking at a trip to Wyoming to tick antelope off the bucket list with a buddy. I've reached out to CBSA for their response on crossing the border with meat, cape and horns (I'll post it here when I get it) but because the threads I saw on this topic were quite dated I was wondering if anyone has had some recent cross border experience either driving or flying they'd care to share?

Although antelopes can't get CWD, I would still get the skull cap or skull completely cleaned off of meat/brain tissue. I've crossed the border several times with animals from Wyoming. Only bring back deboned or processed meat and make sure that skull/cap is clean. Meat doesn't need to be frozen when driving, but should be if you're flying.

Also, look into State regulations, some states do not permit transport of any animals when driving through from certain states, fines and seizures suck and some states like Wyoming require an export permit. Same with Provinces, for example, I can bring travel through my home Province of Saskatchewan with any complete carcass, but a non-resident transiting through the Province can't.

Scruffee, thanks for the response. Excellent tip ref the crossborder interprovincial and state crossing with regards to CWD especially if we fly. Hadn't even thought of that one. If we head out this year we will fly if we go next year we will cross over from Alberta as my partner in crime in this venture is posted that way.

Were your hunts DIY or did you use an outfitter?

Why not hunt antelope in Alberta? Would make things a little easier. - dan

I'm' not interested in paying an outfitter for something I can do myself............................ Alberta

Wyoming has way more and way better animals
Cheeper by far for a outfitted hunt. Easier and funner.
Alberta if you don’t live here(even if you do) isn’t the first, second or third place I would hunt speed goats.

Gents, thanks for the comments. All things seem to point to Wyoming. I'm going to reach out to an outfitter or two for starters. As mentioned prices seem very reasonable.

I hunted pronghorn in Saskatchewan the year after a long closure. Saw hundreds of bucks and could have killed them off the road with a bow. Nothing big. There was a number in our hunting guide for the provincial antelope biologist that I called for ####s and giggles. He actually picked up the phone and we had a good visit. He explained that we are at the extreme of antelope range and therefore trophy quality is less. Same as why there’s no Booner whitetails in Florida.
Another interesting fact is that they don’t need age to be big. Top end bucks can be 2 or 3 years old meaning a heavily hunted area won’t really get shot out like it would for deer.

Hunting speedgoats in Wyoming wouldn't be much of a "hunt", the stupid things are everywhere. The area I work in I see at least 50 every day. Easy picking

Only 50? There were hundreds along the roads last time I went through ...so many we stopped counting after a while.

I like hearing that there's lots about. As for difficulty level I've heard it isn't hard as long as you can shoot straight and distances seem short for the most part from what I've read. I've hunted Springbok in South Africa and found that pretty easy as long as you hunted the wind. Blackbuck antelope in Argentina were a completely different beast and getting close was most definitely a problem and longer shots the norm.

Starvin, nice info from the biologist, much appreciated.

Mur posted on his trips across the border, but sadly he passed a few years back.
His information was very detailed and that just may help find/ask the right questions.
Lots has changed crossing the border, but if the right question is asked the answer shouldn't be to far away.
Sorry not able to assist further, but just spit balling a direction to go.

DIY, I've shot 4 antelopes in Wyoming over the years. My pockets aren't deep enough for outfitted hunts.

TBH, if you want a fun hunt, buy points for the next few years and go with an outfitter. Pronghorn hunting in Wyoming isn't as easy as some would think depending on the area.

Also, keep in mind that Montana and Wyoming have been hit with bad winters and drought and the quotas have gone down by half in some areas. Long are the days of picking up leftover tags. I barely drew my antelope tag this year and I know the system pretty well. Things aren't what they used to now that these hunts are all over social media. Draw odds are crappy.
