Hello everyone,
Like me, l know that some of you love the Browning auto 5 and I thought you may enjoy seeing this nice type 3 that I acquired lately.
What I like about this post WWII type 3, it is the only type of the 6 to represent the engraving technique call "gravure Demi-fond creux" which I think could be call in English half hollow background engraving. Essentially, it consist of deepening the area surrounding the motif in order to give a feeling of 3D. The "Spécial tir aux pigeons" that was marketed especially in Italy is engraved in this manner also. I like as well, the reddish tone given to the walnut that marries well with the grey matte receiver and his gold elements.

The other interesting aspect of this example, is the chrome matte finish of the receiver which, according to the book written by Shirley & Vanderlinden (Browning Auto-5 Shotguns, The Belgian FN Production), page 165, was offered in type 4 and 5 in the S.A.C. (Super Allégé Chrome) series. My example has an alloy trigger guard with a steel receiver which would correspond to the Super lightweight series "S&V page 176. I am surprise that my type 3 as a chrome finish since in both series, the type 3 were normally offered in blued black finish. If it was a S.A.C., it would be stamped on top of the serial number and if it was a Super Allégé (Super lightweight) I believe S.A. would be stamped. On my example, 3 and S are stamped. Would that stand for type 3 Super Allégé. I wonder if it was a special edition or a custom order? May be some of you might know.

Stunning gun. Nice to see such a high grade A-5, thanks for sharing that with us.

Great detail on the engraving, and the overall style is quite remarkable — wonderful pictures!

Browning, like Colt, in the early 60's to the 1970's had custom workbooks for the various gun's that they were willing to have custom engraving etc done
Browning had one of the biggest custom engraving shop's in Europe

During is hundred years of production, Browning offered 6 types (Grade) of "Armes de luxe". They were two generations of "Armes de luxe". I can’t validate the exact dates, but approximately, the first was from 1903 to the second war and the second after the war to 1999.
My goal is the acquire to 6 types, but it is not easy as most of them were sold mainly in Europe.
The type 3 of this post is from the second generation.
Here is a first generation, type 1, from my collection. Interestingly, mine was sold from a 1911 Manufrance catalogue. The markings on the barrel shows that.

Congratulations on having such a fine gun---the condition is superb.
I collected Belgian Brownings for many years and I only recall seeing one enraved Autp 5.
Have you checked out the date of manufacture? Shirley's book should be helpful to find this out.

Thank you. Those type1 to 6 were never commercialized in Canada. The type 3 of this post is a 1961 and the type 1 is 1909. I acquired both in Europe. They are some in the U.S. but the American are going crazy for them, therefore the price is untouchable.

There are a few engraved Auto 5's on US websites and, you're right, they are real pricey.
Hoping you can find more in Europe and share them with the CGN fraternity.

Good morning. I just picked up a Browning auto 5 12ga. Plain reciever no engraving. But it has the same markings as the one you show pics of on the right side of the reciever under the clocking handle and has one stamp on bolt. Do you know what these stamps mean. Thanks Fred.
