Who is still shooting the Modern sporter

You are correct. BJ's in ones own bedroom were also illegal until 1969 in Canada, I'm sure that law was also strictly followed by all law abiding citizens.

I see what you’re saying, but the Firearms Act says that restricted firearms and prohibited handguns can only be discharged at approved ranges. Correct?

According to the FRT released within 1 year of the release of the Modern rifle series, they were NR depending on barrel length.

Go stir the pot somewhere useful

I did, but aren’t restricted firearms and prohibited handguns only allowed to be discharged at an approved range?

Not sure about prohib.

Restricted firearms can legally be discharged at the dwelling place at which they are registered. You do not have to be at an approved range. I.E. if you can legally discharge your non-restricted firearms from your back deck, you can do so with your restricted firearms as well.

To my knowledge there are no laws regarding the use of restricted firearms, only the transport.

To the OP's point, I suspect that most modern sporters get enjoyed on the regular.

This is not true. Restricted firearms are to remain in their locked state pending appropriate transport, and when we're talking about discharging, that is to be done at a regulated and recognized range. This isn't Iraq, you can't just shoot your pistols off your back deck. Jezzus!?

Okay, if they can only be discharged at a range I'm sure you can cite the law that says so, right?

You are wrong.

1) there are NO laws that regulate the discharge of restricted firearms
2) restricted firearms can legally be something other than "stored" or "transported"
3) yes, you literally can shoot your pistols off your back deck within the constraints of the law

How so? ....if you happen to be cleaning one and a bear starts eating your kids in the back yard or something?

You can possess your restricted at your residence, correct?
If you live in an area without discharge restrictions you can discharge a firearm at your residence, correct?

Put it together and tell me what you get.

Fixed it and answered for you.

And..https://www.lcp-law.com/are-you-legally-able-to-fire-a-gun-on-your-property/

And.. perhaps a mea culpa. This lawyer interprets the law to mean that you can indeed handle, and perhaps even shoot a restricted firearm on your property http://plourdelaw.ca/where-can-firearms-be-discharged-in-ontario/

I don't believe you can legally possess a loaded, restricted firearm anywhere other than at a licensed range... You can dry fire I guess, if that counts as shooting?

I guarantee you there is no law that says that.

The law is interpretive where this is concerned. If you want to be the guy who has to defend it in court, go for it? The courts will always apply the concept of reasonableness on any context. However, I can all but guarantee you that if you are using your backyard as a range (think Hickock 45), and a neighbour complains, the court will convince you to stop. There is enough vagueness in the law to allow a court to rule either way.

Yes, but no.

How will the court know you are shooting restricted vs non restricted?

Well, logic would dictate the matter get to court in order for a court to rule on the matter, so I'll ask you, how would a matter get to court?

That's a good question. I'm not sure I can think of a likely scenario. Maybe you can describe how it would play out?
