So I’ve just got my hands on a norinco 1911 in 9mm and double stack mags, given that I didn’t own any handguns before last month I’m a little out of my depth when it comes to working on and modifying them but I love modifying everything else I own so my questions are,

Do these use standard 1911 parts like grips barrels slides and triggers ?

Where can I get parts for these in Canada, I’d love to swap out the barrel and slide for a long one and add some wood grips

How hard are these to get mags for, I’ve been looking on a few sights and have only seen single stack 1911 mags

Any information is appreciated

That’s a contradiction of terms a 1911 with double stack mags.

That alone tells me that most of the parts will be proprietary, except the following

The parts that you can use 1911 parts are
Upper slide and associated parts (barrel, extractor, firing pin)
Disconnect
Sear
Hammer

Pretty much that’s it

Mags are pretty much non-existent

Yeah I agree with you there when I bought it I thought it was single stack and I could make a GI clone out of it but got a different plan now

If you were looking to do a GI clone, then sell the double stack & get something like an NP-29 to go with.

NAA.

Not going to sell anything personally I’ve only just started my collection and right now it’s about quantity over quality, I’ll keep the double stack and try to buy a cheap single stack before I can’t

Good plan. Always add never subtract. I had an NP29 and it was really surprising good for me. Very reliable. I actually shot it better than my 45 cal 1911's. Only got rid of it because I downsized my collection of handguns to one of every caliber.

1911's are fitted parts. You could buy either an aftermarket barrel, or even a nos Norinco one and 98% of the time it will require fitting to the slide. Same holds true for internal parts, you might get away with a drop in trigger and bow but everything else will require some fitting. Even the grip panels, if I recall correctly the screws are standard 1911 thread pitches, but the bushings that thread into the frame is a metric pitch and would require cutting new bushing threads if you were looking to go with thinner grip panels?

My advice would be to leave it stock and just enjoy it for what it is.

Probably good advice but I still want to put a compensated long barrel and port matching slide with mahogany grips on it some day, I’ll probably have to get a couple more norinco 1911s before the freeze and before my wife says no

Really no point in Canada to have a double stacked 9mm, you only gain 1 round.
Check the bushing, barrel , slide fit , but if you plan on a comp barrel than that don't matter, good luck finding a barrel.
Grips will fit, the bushings will not as they are metric the screws are standard threads
Slide to frame fit can be done, and the trigger, sear, if you know what you are doing .
Link and pins.
Sights can be changed, a mill helps.
There are ramped barrels, but this will not be one.
Walnut, or rosewood, etc is way better than mahogany for grips, unless you have a bit of old growth.
