Havent been near good internet service while at camp so didnt post this till now.

On June 17, 2022 at approximately 3:00 AM, some dirtbags decide that they wanted to see what was behind my gate leading into my deer property located off the Black Sturgeon road near Hurkett Ontario. After being unable to cut through the hasp from the gate to the lockbox with bolt cutters, they used their truck to smash the gate, breaking the hasp at the weld. I had to argue with the gate manufacturer to put the lockbox on the gate so no one could cut the padlock, and ended up with about $1000 damage to the gate.

Unfortunately, the camera at the gate took a picture when they were leaving, but the brake lights were on and you cant see a plate. But my other camera on the driveway got a picture of the truck my on property:

Moral here is always have multiple cameras - I place them 12 - 15 feet up in the trees where possible, angled downwards.

OPP think its a GMC / Chev. I know there are members here from the Thunder Bay area, so if anyone in the Nipigon - Red Rock - Hurkett - Dorion - Thunder Bay area spots a 2 door extended cab truck with a Rockstar sticker in the passenger side rear window and can get a licence plate number, please PM me so i can forward on to the Nipigon OPP detachment. Looks like they had already been shopping, there is a generator and what looks like a grey water tank from a trailer or RV in the back of the box. And they never broke into my camper - nothing was missing from my property. By pure chance, I went up to the property the following morning and found the gate smashed.

Anyone in the area that can recommend a good mobile welding outfit? My poor gate, it only opened outwards before, and the hinges are bent and the lockbox almost got torqued off the post. You can see where the hasp broke at the weld. and the bolt cutter marks on it as well.

I have had issues with trespassers before, hence the cameras up at multiple locations, but this is the first time someone has broken in. Really pisses me off.

Thanks

The truck is stolen, they didn't smash a gate with their own truck. Tell the cops to check stolen truck reports. Perhaps they can combine evidence and come up with something.

A detective buddy told me the same thing - no sense smashing your own wheels....

Not only that, but thieves do not want to be using an identifiable vehicle that is attached to themselves... they steal a vehicle that can be abandoned if they are caught red-handed.

Sorry to hear all this. I hate to say it but it's almost a given that any remote property is gonna get broken into at some point these days, twice for me. My cottage is on Manitoulin Island and there has been drug related shootings this year, along with more and more b and e. The "big city" is everywhere these days and it's a damn shame.

Yep, they will use the truck for a while then dump and burn it.

The decal in the back window is a dead giveaway. If the cops have time and ambition, they should quickly solve the case. It’s pretty certain that the perps will be known to the cops.

Btw, you can be charged under the criminal code for leaving spike traps on your property.

Setting mantraps is illegal. Not sure if car/truck traps would be.

I had a neighbor growing up that was always "fixing" his texas gate. He would do so by removing the gate/rail part when he left his property. Of course that would leave pretty much a tank trap at the entrance to the yard.
Another neighbor would leave his harrows near the gate of his fields so he could hook up and harrow any time he felt like.
Not a lot of stolen items from either of those farms.

When I was 16 I went and asked the neighbor if I could hunt on his place. He said no problem. A couple weeks later I pulled into the neighbors field after a fresh snow. It would have been real nice had he told me he had upside down diamond harrows in the driveway.

Unfortunately the Ontario Occupiers Liability Act protects criminals:

4 (1) The duty of care provided for in subsection 3 (1) does not apply in respect of risks willingly assumed by the person who enters on the premises, but in that case the occupier owes a duty to the person to not create a danger with the deliberate intent of doing harm or damage to the person or his or her property and to not act with reckless disregard of the presence of the person or his or her property. R.S.O. 1990, c. O.2, s. 4 (1).
Criminal activity

(2) A person who is on premises with the intention of committing, or in the commission of, a criminal act shall be deemed to have willingly assumed all risks and is subject to the duty of care set out in subsection (1).

I doubt the theives will report their flat tires.

If a used 2x4 with nails in it falls off my trailer on my own road, I'll take my chances...
