My limited knowledge of the subject suggests that the Canadian military have been trying to replace the sidearm since initial beginnings in 2013.
Since the current government has no missgivings about spending money,it would be the perfect time to get replacements and inject the surplus market with pistols we would all be eager to buy.

Inject the surplus market . Trudeau the one that is going to stop the importation, transfer , sale of handguns is going to inject the surplus market with high powers.? The only way you are going to get a high power from the current military stock is if you buy razor blades that Brownings have been melted down to make.

FN and SMG's went to the smelter and so will the Browning pistols.

All military procurement includes complete 'life cycle' which means everything from the day the item first arrives, it's maintenance and supply of parts throughout its service life to its final disposal. And that disposal means it will not be sold as surplus.

What would Ukrainians want paper weights for? Don't they have enough broken junk floating around already?

Just use them to take the good stuff from the Russians.

How would they know their decrepity? None have probably ever been used in anger.

Best we can hope for is they get donated to Ukraine and 20 years from now come back as surplus if the handgun ban is ever lifted one day.

It is illegal for a government agency or department to sell surplus firearms to the public market. Won't happen, that's all folks!

Before someone mentions Ranger No 4's - they were gifted, and that required the CDS to sign off on it.

Given the enormity of actually getting them all back...it was a far more elegant solution.

Incorrect. It required an order in Council, and the Liberals approved it. Their motivations for doing so are open to interpretation, but many Rangers are indigenous.

The CDS had zero authority to dispose of materiel. All of that authority is in DND and the cabinet.
