My new lightweight .260 Rem

A few months ago a member was asking who was making stainless 6.5x55 or
.260 Rem and I suggested buying a stainless Remington SPS and screwing a barrel of his choice for an economic option.

Well, I took my own advise and went with it. Got a take off stainless .260 Rem barrel with a mountain contour off EE and a Ti take off stock from 24H Campfire. I looked around for a used short action stainless Rem 700 rifle as a donor for a few weeks but when it didn't pan out, I got impatient and bought a new stainless SPS in .243 Win for a donor. Got talking with Rembo (who also put together my stainless Ruger in .35 Whelen) and we worked out a deal. He screwed on the .260 barrel, polish out a ding that was on the barrel and beadblasted the whole thing to match the finish of the SPS with the stainless barrel. The thing looks awesome.

I dropped her in the Ti stock and installed a Leupold VXII 2-7X33 in Talley LW ring. I'm just waiting for an ADL skeletonized Ti mag box from Remington and the whole thing will be completely finish.

Without the mag box and the follower, as pictured, she weights 6Lbs 9oz. What do you guys think so far. Range report to follow.

Just got it back from Rembo at the end of last week. I haven't shot it yet, still waiting for a mag box, although if it's not here next week, I'll be trying her single shot:D. I haven't bedded it yet but I'm thinking about it. I'll see how she shoots first with the pressure bumps. What's everybody's experience with mountain contour barrel, bumps or freefloat?

NAA: That ding on the barrel is litteraly gone, I had to look for a few seconds to even remember where it used to be.

She should be deadly on deer with 120gr TSX:evil:.
 
Looks like a nice one Steve.....this is a good route to a lightweight if you can find a Ti stock....SPS's are readily available and take-off stainless MR barrels are around....

Just to add the what Steve has told us on the bead blasting, what I do is file down the raised areas around the stamping, polish the outside of the receiver and beadblast everything together. The finish is WAY better than a factory SPS and just a bit rougher than a factory stainless Mountain rifle finish. I have a 25-06 I built this way with a stainless SPS action.
 
I've had two mountain riflles in 260 and both shot very well with the tip pressure, the first was one of the most accurate rifles I've ever owned.

That's a nice rig, how much do you have into it if you don't mind?

I'll give it a try witht the tip pressure first and we'll see.

Barrel: $135
Ti Stock: $175
Ti Trigger guard: $20
Ti ADL mag box and tab screw: $18
New Remington SPS .243 Win: $620
Plus labour, I have around $1000

It's a titaniumless Remington Ti:D. I was actually thinking of having the bolt fluted as well but we'll see.

I'm hoping to get the 120gr TSX to shoot in it. TSX for hunting and 120gr Remington bulk or Sierra for practice. I have a few powder on hand that should work, RL19, H4350, H4831sc. Would the .260 Master have any suggestions?:D
 
Don't over look 130 Grain AccuBonds over H1000 powder. Out of my 24" tube this seems to be the best hunting round to date. Just picked up a box of TSX 130's FB and will run some of those in the spring to find a load. If its a Rem barrel with their older 1:9 ROT you might find the same thing as me and thats that the Nosler BT 100's pushed fast with 49 g of H4350 could very well be the most accurate.

That was me asking, and I haven't done it yet, but seeing how your's turned out, hmmm.:) Looks great.

try em all, they will work. If I had to pick one for the 120s it'd be H4831sc around 48.5-49.5 grains for 2850-2950 f/s
