I have a Chiappa 1887 that i bought here. It is the standard model, not the T model or the load 2/shoot 2 CAS model. Beautiful gun, but something is not right. The trigger pull is abominable, like pulling a cat off a board fence by its tail!
Also I was watching Hickok45 review the T model and he was showing how you lower that tiny hammer to half #### and then to full #### again. Now granted, Hickok45 has huge hands, but there is no way anyone could bring the hammer on mine back to full ####. The only way you can do it is by moving the lever part way.
So, all these things lead me to believe that someone disassembled the gun and put it back together wrong, or some other problem exists.

Who would you recommend to fix it. I would prefer someone in SW Ontario but I would be willing it ship the gun to someone good.

Thanks in advance for your help and for NOT recommending your brother in law that just finished his correspondence school gunsmithing course.;)

Try Peter Riedel: Rusty Wood Trading Co. Phone: 604 302 6176. Peter is a well-known cowboy action gunsmith here in Canada. He may be able to help you out. His shop is in Mission B.C.

So I looked into the suggested smith and I also contacted Chiappa's warranty/repair center. But then I was watching YouTube videos about dismantling 1901/1887 shotguns by various makers. Didn't look too hard, so I went ahead and took mine apart. I examined all the parts, cleaned and lubed everything and reassembled (getting the mainspring back in was a bit of a wrestling match). Lo and behold !....now the gun works perfect! I fixed it! Can you believe that sh*t!

Obviously, one of the previous owners had reassembled it wrong. Amazing that it worked at all!! Now, I can put it on half #### and return it to full #### without having to have a grip like a salesman. Trigger pull is pretty good, for a shotgun, but vastly better that the tug-o-war it was previously.

Happy day! Drinks are on me!

kferguson: Good to hear! So often the problem, with these types of guns.....1897 pumps, too. Bubba can't figure out how the thing works. So often ends up making a mess of the thing.

I know several cowboy action competitors who run 1887's as main match guns. Some original, some reproductions. Once tuned up, they can run right along with the pump and double-barrel shooters, with equal enthusiasm.

Now, go out and have some fun!

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Alex! This gun went from a disappointment, that I had put away in the vault and fretted over, to a fun gun that I can't put down! There is a growing pile of empties on the ground:)

Oh, oh. That’s how gunsmithing hobbies get started. Next thing you know, you’re buying broken guns on purpose!

Congratulations on embracing your new hobby with both hands.
