Yeah you heard me with a 28gauge, so what say you CGN with the right ammo and setup is this workable? I was wandering the YouTube machine the other night and came across the video below and it has me wondering about pulling out the 28 for decoying geese specifically. Interested in thoughts/opinions and most importantly actual experiences.

What load would you use if it was you? I've only been able to find Federal number 6 steel running at 1350 fps and a 1oz load.

I ran a 20g O/U for decoying geese for a couple years and seemed to do OK with #2 steel.

A friend and I split on a case of #4 28g bismuth that I'd be willing to try on geese. It wasn't cheap though.

Now that I have the Benelli Ethos in 28 ga and can shoot the newer 3" shells, I will have to try it out on geese and ducks.
I see that Fiocchi has announced a Golden Waterfowl Bismuth 15/16 oz load w/ #4 shot in a sealed hull, at 1350 fps, in a 10 round box.
Going to see if Prophet River can get me some. (Hint, hint! LOL)

Hevi-Shot produces 28 gauge #4 non toxic just for waterfowl. But it is not cheap. "Across the Pond" or a title of that effect.

A buddy splurged on a box of those and somehow lost them between the truck and the blind. We looked for hours after the morning hunt but the marsh must have just swallowed them up. I didn't want to ask what he paid but I did buy him lunch because he was a wee bit ticked. Same guy also lost 2 new boxes of shells for his Hornet, he doesn't have real good luck with spendy shells.

Ouch.....ouch!

My plan is to only shoot on close in decoying birds that are cupped and committed inside of 20 yards buddy is gonna run backup for me at first with a 12 gauge, don't want any unintended cripples that could be avoided. I don't mind spending the money on good ammo even the spendy tungsten or bismuth stuff just looking for recommendations on what's worth plunking the cash down on.

Thanks for all the replies gang.

I have used a 28 gauge on GW Teal, BW Teal, Black Ducks, Mallards, and Gadwall. The gun at the time was a Beretta A400 and I was using Kent Bismuth #6's. All ducks were over the decoys, and I was aware of my distances and skill level haha.

I was the splitter of the 28ga Hevi Bismuth case, it was according to the distributor the only one in the country at that time.

It was Hevi-Bismuth 1oz 4s . Personally I’d use them on decoying honkers and any duck at reasonable ranges, based on the performance of the 16,20ga loads I tried from them as well.

One thing to keep in mind with Bismuth is that it is all actually nearly a full size smaller than is listed on the box, because of the difference in Euro and American measurement of shotsize. Kent and Environmetal (Hevi-shot) pellets all come from the same place in the UK.

Kent seems to have wised up and the newer stuff is allegedly sized correctly on the box.

I'd even settle for the raw components so I could just make some up myself. Tough to find it in bulk, and as noted not cheap ;-)

Boss shells in Michigan would also work great. Only available from the factory last I heard, also in the US.

Yes I've been looking at those just would need to figure out getting them imported here. There was mention of them looking into getting a supply into Canada on their website but its been a while with no news on that front, might drop them an email.
