Seeking Caliber Choice Advice

I thought about picking a Type 54 / M57 just for the heck of it, but I thought most (indoor) ranges wouldn't allow commonly available 7.62x25 ammo (because steel plated/core) - am I off course with that assumption?

Wish I could tell you, the nearest indoor range to me is a 12hr drive but I did get two type 54s just for fun bought one and traded a 22 for the other

True. A lot of indoor ranges were built with mild steel backstops which will dimple if FMJs are used. Since a lot of the Tokarev ammo is steel jacketed and the velocity is pretty fast they would be a no-no with mild steel backstops. Fortunately our club was originally a police range and they rebuilt it with hardened steel to accomodate jacketed ammo when the police switched to Glocks so 7.62x25 won't hurt it. You could, however, shoot lead bullet 7.62 x 25 reloads on most ranges as it is the bullets that are not allowed, not the pistol or calibre. Reloadable 7.62x25 cases do exist as do reloading dies. While they are a bit of a pain to reload being a bottleneck cartridge it is not that difficult. I have reloaded them myself.
