Hi all,I managed to find a Mk4 artillery carbine project.Its the one with the stubby muzzle and Bayonet lug on the front band.Which bayonet does it take?Is it the same one as the 2 band yataghan?Where can I find one?Dave.
 
The Artillery carbine Mk IV was the last version of the Snider being accepted in 1891. They were primarily intended for cadet use. I have one that was manufactured at the Birmingham repair facility using a Mk III action and cut down 3-groove iron barrel. Very nice carbines. Mine came with bayo but I don't recall trying it on anything else to see if it was interchangeable with Short Rifle yataghans. If I can find it at the back of the safe I'll try some different sword bayonets on it and see what fits but it may take a few days.

Dave.S: Located my Mk IV and confirmed that I did get a bayonet along with it. I have several other British Yataghans and found that the commonly available version that fits on 2-band Sniders does not fit on the short Mk IV Artillery carbine. The difference appears to be mainly in the slot in the handle that slides over the bayonet lug- none of the Snider types are even close to fitting the Mk IV. Interestingly, I have a Yataghan specifically for the old P56 muzzle-loader (second version) bar on band rifle and the slot also fits on the Mk IV although the hole for the muzzle is too small. I can't easily say if a Snider version could be easily modified to work- the muzzle diameter appears to be close and the distance from ring to slot looks identical. Perhaps some bayonet collector out there knows if the older "bar on band" bayonets were routinely converted for use on the later P53 2 band bar on barrel models which were converted to Sniders.

Never even thought to check the book! There were lots of P56 (second version) = P58 "bar on band" rifles used so I wouldn't think the bayonets are rare but the problem might be that some may be just a loose bayonet with uncertain application. My P56 or 58 bayonet would require reaming to fit on my AC IV.

So this came out of an attic in Newfoundland, I guess it was stored standing up as there was a lot of debris in the chamber, the chamber was rusty had to clean the whole action to get at it.theres pitting in the chamber and on the bolt face,I have firearms to shoot them.opinions on is it fireable?the bore is nice other than the chamber.Dave
