Hi Fellas
As some of you may know from my posts I purchased 3 new pistols after the latest handgun freeze .
I have never shot a handgun . I have experienced with rifles and shotguns however and realize this latest venture is totally different .
I’m going to go over each of them and their workings and read the manuals and I have snap caps for them .

Would it be advisable that I take some sort of introduction to handguns before I go to the range and shoot them for the first time ?
Thank You!

does your range have an open forum board?

Id offer a box of ammo and a hot coffee for some time with an experience fellow range member (IDPA-Black Badge etc) not just a guy whos "been around"

Does your club have any house league shoots, or general handgun night? As alot of clubs would have a schedualed night for handguns shooting.

I know when I first started shooting, I'd would go on Tuesday and talk to the old bullseye shooters. I just brought ammo and they were nice enough to lend me one of their spare guns.

Just because someone that shoots IDPA doesnt mean they're the best to talk to. Some of those been around guys are excellent teachers.

Agreed that some of the "Been around guys" are great. But some have picked up some bad habits along the way. The reason I say IDPA is because they have at least proven that they are safe.

My club has a "mini RPAL" course that includes handgun live fire with their instructors before you're allowed on your own.
If not mandatory at your club, maybe see if they offer a familiarization session of some sort.

Honestly find PPC shooters. Safe means nothing if they cannot really shoot, as there are fair share that have bad habits. Not knocking sport shooters as I shot IPSC for many years, But I learned more shooting PPC, then speed shooting.

Personally just ask around at the club.

Getting quality instruction and coaching would be a really good idea.
And just because a person is a shooter, it doesn't mean that the person is capable of teaching.

Most clubs require a probation shooting program be completed before you're turned loose on the range by yourself? The RO will determine your "competency" with a handgun.

You’re in the Lower mainland, sign up for Silvercore’s lvl1 handgun class. It’s a two day deal and you will learn the fundamentals of marksmanship, day one in class and day two at the range. Worth taking, then sign up for the lvl2. The JIC range is real fun.

I just went the first time after orientation, having not shot anything for a very long time. I am sure it was safe but the results will need some work. ;)

Bcfirearms academy has a intro to handgun course, classroom only, teaches you how safely use a pistol with uncaseing, range etiquette, sight picture, malfunctions, using a holster and the do’s and dont’s that some people are unsure about asking!

They also have one day live fire courses, 1 on 1 training sessions and can cater to almost anything you want.

I cannot stress enought, get proper training from a professional instructor. 4 hours on the range with a Pro will serve you far better than any amount of youtube videos or tips from guys that may shoot well but cannot teach, or even worse, guys that THINK they can shoot well.

I've seen little girls hit bullseye within their first few shots that had never even held any type of firearm before. You're over thinking this.

Try getting in touch with Abbotsford - or Rob (Slavex) and find out if they're still running "Skills and drills" you won't find too many better instructors anywhere, and especially in BC. They used to run this in the evenings on a drop in basis.
