I am just getting into PRS shooting and am looking for a good mat to lay on for practice and at shoots. I am in my 70's and need any help I can get, I have looked on Amazon and there is a lot to choice from. Any body with experience with these please let me know. I want a quality mat with padding and big enough for a 6' person. Thanks

The Cabelas branded mat is a good quality unit. They are a bit too expensive regularly, but multiple times a year they go on sale for $60.

Same one I use. Wait for 50% off. Normally I wouldn’t recommend cabelas because of them being a faceless undercutting box store, but when stuff hits 50% off, I know at least their profits are minimal.

I have an AHG from nordic, and a custom ran one from otoh before he shut the doors.

When you buy pay attention to color. A black mat suckssssssssssss when it’s 25C or more out. I sold my first mat specifically due to that.

If I was going to buy another I’d do the Sauer mat, or a nice trifold from nordic or Creedmoor. The cabela’s ones aren’t in the same league, but nice if you want a smaller mat.

I've used loaner Cabela's ones at a couple matches and they're pretty good. They tend to try to roll back up though. I bought one from Amazon that's Ruger branded and doubles as a rifle drag bag, and it's not too bad either. It cost more than just a shooting mat, and isn't quite as nice as a dedicated shooting mat, but it's one less thing to pack around.

I used one similar too this for several years when I used to shoot NRA high power.

You will rarely if ever use a mat at shoots. Investing in a quality set of rain gear is a good idea though.

:agree:

Otherwise, the Cabelas is OK while on sale (kind of bulky)
- The VISM/NcStar Roll Up Shooting mat is smaller... the tan version is on sale for $60 on amazon

Different disciplines have different circumstances. I prefer to shoot off a mat for DCRA target rifle. A few good reasons for me are:
- habit forming means fewer things to remember
- holds my elbows reasonably more stable than on grass
- fills in small surface irregularities and keeps my clothes clean(er)
- catches my brass, loose pen, note pad, cartridge box
- folded into fours, it becomes a loose carrier for the rifle and kit

Yes, the OP is not shooting TR or FTR. He asked about PRS where there is very little belly shooting. I too use a mat in FTR.

Lawn chair cushion? I use 3 workout mat sections when I'm shooting locally. When I'm up on crown I usually just use a blanket, but I'll be lucky if I can still go prone when I'm 70! Good on ya.
