This past weekend I picked up a lovely little side by side shotgun.

A 1966 12ga Monte Carlo version of a Hungarian Rudolf Frommer and his team at Femaru- Fegyver- es Gepgyar Rt, Budapest

The one thing I'm trying to determine is the choke. One barrel is marked 17.2, and the other barrel is marked 17.8

Could somebody please tell me which is full and which is modified?

Thanks!

It's more like extra full (.677") and improved modified (.701') ... not for steel shot I am sure...

SHOTGUN BARREL ALTERATIONS FOR STEEL SHOT

Forcing Cone Alteration:

Factory shotgun barrels usually have a fairly short and abrupt forcing cone. The forcing cone is the tapered area just ahead of the chamber where the shell is contained. Altering the forcing cone, so it is one and one half or two inches in length, reduces recoil and improves the pattern density. Trap shooters and skeet shooters have been doing this for many years. It is a good benefit to the steel shot user as well.

Choke Alteration:
Choke designation from the tightest to the most open are:
Extra Full, Full, Improved Modified, Modified, Skeet II, Improved Cylinder, Skeet I, and Cylinder Bore.

Steel shot does not require the constriction that lead shot needs, to produce good patterns. In fact too much constriction, causes poor, erratic patterns, and in some cases, permanently damages the barrel. I have seen barrels bulged at the choke, I have seen barrels where the choke split right open, from using steel shot.

For steel shot, with thin barrels, chokes should be altered to at least Skeet II. Often, over & under, and side-by-side shotguns, are best altered to Skeet I and Skeet II chokes. Heavier barrels can be left at Modified choke but may see an improvement in the pattern if opened slightly.

I agree that this shotgun is not for steel shot.

I was under the impression that it was full and modified, but I also understand that it could be extra full and improved modified.

Could you please tell me how the 17.2 and the 17.8 equates to the Imperial measurements you posted? Is it mm to inches?

I do intend to shoot trap with this gun

The amount of choke is relative to the bore diameter and not all bores are the exact same diameter.
Nominal bore diameter for a 12 guage is 18.3 mm (.721 inches) for these older guns. So asuming this is the bore diameter of your gun, 17.2 mm (.677 inches) and 17.8 mm (.700 inches) equates to 1.1mm (.044 inches) and 0.5mm (.021 inches) under bore diameter which equates to extra full and modified. That's the theory but in reality the only way to know for sure is to go pattern the gun.
