After reading a thread on stolen tree stands I would like to ask why do some hunters or should I call them bird watchers leave their portable store bought tree stands up year after year. This is on public and private land, some of the locked chains from the tree stand have grown into the tree killing the tree. One stand on public land for over 5 years is about to fall soon as the strap is in shredds from the tree growing bigger and the stand is cable locked to the tree? Most are unsafe to use and would have to be cut from the tree because of rusted locks, many have the tree steps grown into the tree also. There is a store bought ladder stand on public land that is unlocked against a tree for 3 full years. One of the stands was across the line and the farmer put a note on it to move it off his property. We asked the other hunter in our bush and he forgot about it? I know of over 20 portable stands left behind from previous hunters or trespassers. Maybe some are stolen or maybe some nature lover forgot where they put it but I hope the forgotten lost stands were not reported as stolen, ya think?

In Saskatchewan it is illegal to place a stand with out your name and address and illegal to leave it past the big game season on crown land. Yet I don't think many guys really follow these rules.

Tracker I see your point.
I take mine down every year. Like you stated they become unsafe if left up year after year. But I do have some 'permenant' stands that I have built like tree houses. (here comes the flaming from the tree huggers):D:D

Good law

I'd like to see it illegal in NB.It causes alot of problems, especially amongst moose hunters. It seems that some folks think because they took a Saturday afternoon one summer and built a chainsaw carpentry treehouse overlooking a prime moose bog,it gives them and any of their buddys that get drawn in the future claim to the spot for life.Private land,go ahead, build a heated condo with satelite TV if you want, but crown land is there for everybody and anybody. With only a 3 day season annually and only about 1/15 chance of being drawn for a tag, folks get pretty wound up and defensive over moose hunting sometimes.

I was talking about this same thing with a friend not too long ago. We both know of stands that are in fairly good shape considering that they have been left up for 5+ years with the tree growing into the chains/straps. We both quad the area frequently and have decided that since they don't have any names+ phone #'s as required here in MB for hunting, were going to go and take them down in the spring.

"...why do some hunters..." They're irresponsible idiots. Sadly, there are lots of 'em too. Mind you, there are likely a lot of 'em who forgot where they put the stand up.

I can tell you one thing...and that's if some assh$le went and took my stands down that have been put up thinking they had been forgotten I would certainly pay him a very unfriendly visit! My stands are on private property and in most cases locked to the tree to deture dinks from stealing them. If it ain't yours.....leave it be! Or leave a notein a ziplock bag...but leave it be.

That makes you nothing more than a common criminal. As someone who has had stands stolen, I would love to catch someone in the act. Bears don't leave much evidence.;)The Regs in Manitoba do not require a name, phone#, etc. on stands, they require them on bear baits. The regulations do require the removal of stands from crown land after the season has ended, regardless they are not your stands to take. If your pissed off report them or leave a note.

I get at least one new stand a year off my property left by tresspassers. The only thing worse than some #### tresspassing and hunting my property is that same #### with balls big enough to think he can leave his stand there. I have nearly a dozen stands of all types, some pretty nice. And I always take the new stand found on my property to landowners in the area to make sure that it was not taken off their land and replanted (which happens a lot).

I've found game cams strapped to my trees and stepped in front of some with a sign saying "get the #### off my land".. sometimes they get removed. If they don't they get their lens cleaned with a sledge.

My area isn't isolated nor adjacent to crown land. Anyone hunting on it KNOWS that they shouldn't be there, and the landowners around mine are the same. We all know who hunts around us, and all the guys that are allowed to be on our neighbours property. On two occasion I've even had vehicles towed off my property, and stuck around to report the poachers/tresspassers when they arrive back.

..####ers. I hate thieves, and tresspassing and hunting without permission is the same as breaking into my house and sealing my TV.

Your right, the stands don't need a phone number, but take a closer look at page 16 of the reg book and you'll see that a name and address is required. These stands don't have that. These stands HAVE NOT been used in at least 5 years, how can I tell, there are no tracks in either the summer or winter, and you can tell by looking at the stand and the surrounding area.

The stands are not serving any purpose what so ever, and are not being used, which is why I am going to take them down. I'm not pissed off at all, I could have left a note I guess but the last time I checked squirrles can't read so what good would it have done?

Since you jumped up and got your panties in a knot, I was going to give them to a buddy who is a CO and let him decide what to do with them. That's not a common criminal now is it???

I think alot of stands go missing because they are put where they shouldn't be. I too have a collection of stands and gorrila steps that trespassers/poachers have put up on my brother's property. I figure if they want them back they can call the cops and explain why they were in there anyway. One group of hunters even confronted my brother demanding if he had permission to be in his own woods!

Anyone here ever put up or take down a ladder stand? Not an easy job.

I thought it was easy. Tied the bottom to the tree, walked toward the tree with it overhead until it was close enough to push against the tree. Then strap it in place.

I thought I could have done mine (Luxury Box) with two guys easily but it was still a short struggle with three. It is definitely much larger and more awkward than yours.

Abandoned metal in the woods is just litter. I wish more guys were as passionate about their beer cans and old tv's. If some tard leaves a stand up outside of the appropriate season it's litter. I pick up cans and garbage when I'm in the woods and I'm not a thief. Leaving anything in the woods is poor practice in my opinon. Private land, fill your boots. Crown land belongs to everyone and no one wants to have to look at your sh_t.
Just my 2 cents.

Some outfitters are side-stepping that requirement by offering off-season nature watching from their hunting stands. Apparently, nature observatory stands fall under different rules because they can be used legally year round.

Amen. I invest a lot of time and money scouting, hanging stands etc., and then some idiot who claims to be a hunter steals my stands or trespasses and shoots a buck I've been hunting all season; well I just about lose it when that happens

Sorry to get my knickers in a knot, just the way you first stated your case. If you let MNR handle it I don't have a problem. I spend a lot of time putting up stands and can't always get back to them right away, so when they disappear a few weeks later I'm more than a little iritated.
