Hey all. I’m currently in the US and I found a gun shop that is selling new 30 round gen 3 pmags for $9. Has anyone purchased magazines in the us and pinned them themselves? Just thinking to have the shop drill a hole for me and then I jump to home depot and get a rivet gun and some rivets.

My questions are:

1) at what measurement should the hole be drilled?
2) what size drill bit?
3) what size rivet and length?
4) have you done this before? What kind of paperwork is involved at the border?

Thanks.

You'll likely have much more trouble with the process of exporting them out of the States than you will with importing them into Canada. Most firearms parts require export permits.

We are now giving advice to smugglers on a publicly accessible forum? Does not seem a good idea given the current climate.......

Not only the fact that you won’t be able export/import them. The other issue is that from the time you received them until you pinned them you would be in possession of a prohibited device. The only way that importers/businesses are able to do this is with special permits - not available to the individual.

If individuals were allowed to order prohibited devices and possess them with only the promise/intent of making them comply with the law, everybody would be doing it. Not only that but everyone would have a suppressor that they’ve neutered, and a full auto AK-47 that they are just waiting to have deactivated.

I think you missed the part where he said he's in the US right now. He wants to pin them down there and bring them home.

When you travel to the US with your firearms obviously you document and declare them on entry. Are you also required to declare the accessories, e.g. mags?

I wonder if OP stuck rivots in them on state side and then shipped them to himself by mail would be a somewhat of a legal solution?

II'm thinking, if they are intercepted still on the state side, they would just confiscate them and maybe OP would get a nasty phone call once back in Canada?
(Not sure if this would be breaking the law or just some regulations)

If intercepted on the Canadian side, they should be all in compliance for as long as they can't hold more than 5 rounds?

The export would still be illegal and such a declaration would obviously be an attempt to conceal the exact nature of the goods being illegally exported.

Thanks for everyone’s comments. I was hoping I could save some dinero by buying them here and pinning them before we got to the border but looks like it’s going to be a no. I would rather not go to jail or have a call from the RCMP (unless it was to say that they reversed some of their classification decisions) so I will just look and fondle everything they have here. Sigh.

as it was said already - you should be more worried about CBP and state police than CBSA and RCMP if mags are pinned on the States side ..

I thought we already did?
