I'm looking to buy some leg hold traps from US for my den. They are new traps with no jaws.
Just wondering if they are legal to buy/import/keep and put on the wall for spiderman?

Thankz!

From what I understand you wouldnt be able to buy them in Canada without a trappers license and its not legal to possess them unless you have a valid trappers license.

I know when ever I buy traps that I have to give them my trappers license same as we all do with our firearms license to buy ammo or firearms.

Sounds like an "Ontario thing". Anyone can buy traps in Saskatchewan, using them is a different matter. One of these days I'll pick up a bear trap for a wall hanging, teeth and all.

For new traps I would suggest Halford Hide Co in Alberta. On the other hand modern leghold traps have padded jaws and spacers so that the jaws do not close completely. If you want classic older style traps for display check out gun shows and antique shows. The smaller ones are relatively cheap. Also the open V trademark on the pan of Victor traps, was introduced in 1909 so if you are looking for pre 1900 traps buy ones with a solid pan. Bear traps are pretty pricey and run $600 or more for a good one. Traps with teeth are not terribly common on the antique market, in my experience

"It is illegal for any person to possess OR use an operable body-gripping trap except a licensed trapper or a person who has been licensed as a trapper in the past five years or a farmer on his property"
Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act. Summary of Regulations

Operable body gripping trap= legholding traps, Conibears, snares or any similar traps, except the common box live-trap.

Jesus. Is there anything sane or sensible about Ontario?

Get a classic old school one that will only gain in value. There's just something about old rusty steel traps when they are on display. They tell crazy stories without saying a word.

Something like this:

You'll need a bear hide to hang up in the den as well.

If you do find an old one do not clean it at all. Collectors value will drop into the tank.

Why in God's name do you people continue to live in the most oppressive province in the country? You need your gun club to 'approve' your membership and apply for your ATT, you can only use certain firearm calibres to hunt with in some areas, no spring black bear season....... never mind you have no elk, sheep, or mule deer.

Run away, run away!! :runaway:

Move west, find freedom. It's a novel concept.

Within the trapping industry, "body gripping trap" is the genaric name used to distinguish "conibear type" traps from leg hold traps. I'd be looking at he glossary attached to the regulations before making difinitive statement as to the possession of foot hold traps or snares

Well within the Ontario Trapping Industry the definition of body gripping trap is how Longpoint described. Here is the regulation text as per the Ontario Fur Manager website:

24. It is illegal for any person to possess or use an operable body-gripping trap* except a licensed trapper or a person who has been licensed as a trapper in the past five years or a farmer on his property. However, any person may take varying hare using neck snares made of 22 to 24 gauge copper or brass wire loop no bigger than 10 centimetres in diameter, in the area north of the French and Mattawa Rivers, under the authority of a trapping licence or small game hunting licence. * (legholding traps, Conibears, snares or any similar traps, except the common box live-trap.)
