I just bought a .17 HMR, it’s a Savage 93R – GLV. What scope would you recommend? My dad has a Bushnell 3.5-10X36mm 17 Super Banner on his .17 HRM and I don’t think the clarity is that great; I would like something better. Any suggestions?

If you plan to shoot paper at 100 yards, trying to spot a hole in the paper .17" across is hard without switching to a proper spotting scope. That said, seeing a gopher explode at 220 yards is well worth an investment of a 6 - 20 magnification alone. These little rimfire can really reach out, why not be there to watch?

I suggest a Nikon Buckmaster 6-18x40.

I have a bushnell Banner 6-18x50 on my HMR and really like it. So far I have found the windage and elevation adjustments to be accurate and the scope is not to bad for clarity IMO. I also have several Bushnell 3200's and 4200's and really like them and despite the fact that they are a few more $$ I think they are worth it - retail value with them doesn't seem to be to bad either.

I had the same scope and found it quite clear up to 9X after that, not as clear but definitely satisfactory for the money.

Depending on your budget really, on my varmint rifle (22-250) I have a 3200 5-15X50 it's amazingly sharp.

I have that bushnell super 17 on my savage 93r17f and its not a bad scope. I wish I had more magnification though. 10x is not enough to get the full capabilities of the 17hmr. I'll probably sell this one and buy a 6-18x or higher

I have the Bushnell 3200 5-15x40 on my CZ 17HMR, really like it, my new 17 CZ will likely get the 6-18x40 VXII, also a real nice scope but just about double the price of the Bushnell.
I hear that Bushnell scopes are supposed to come down in price for 2008 by as much as 10% on most models, so gopher season not being for quite sometime you may want to hold out for a couple of months. FS
