Public land etiquette

Public land is first come first serve, I’ve run into others while out hiking into spots I haunt. If it’s vacant I’ll hunt the spot, if someone is already there’s I’ll politely say hi and wish them a good day and I’ll move on to another area. If I found an empty blind I’d approach it the same.

I always revert to an analogy that I built up in my head over the years when this question comes up.

You are in need of a public washroom - and you stumble across a Porta-Potty in an open field at a festival. Only problem is that someone approaches it the same time you do and beats you to it by 2 seconds. You really have to go - no foolin :) What do you do?

Do you knock on the door and plead your case? You can try yelling - but if he really needs it as bad as you do - I don't think he is going to budge from the throne.
Do you kick the door down and remove the occupant to use it? It is "public property" and you have the same rights to it as anyone else. You saw it at the same time.
Do you hover over the person in the stall and try to use it at the same time? No laws say you can't - but likely wont win any friends that way
Or do you move on and keep on looking for another? Or wait your turn?

Sure but there’s nobody in the portapotty in this scenario. What if you had to go and someone had put a sign on the portapotty door that said “reserved for Doug’s occasional use only”. It’s a public portapotty so what right does Doug have to reserve it?

its like they guys that park their trucks on a trail blocking access, Bad Form

we don't cut valve stems that would also be bad form

however if there is room to get quads around (there is always a way) we will go around and hunt the area.

its public / crown land, there is no 'my spot' and when I'm hunting and the recreational riders come along the trail that I'm walking I just stand aside and let them pass. If I'm on the quad I let them pass and just wait a little while. I do my best to find more remote areas where I don't see many people, but there is always the chance of running into someone.

If you don't like it then find some private land you can get exclusive permission to hunt.

dans le nord du Québec, j’espère pas vivre ca a notre terre de chasse ( bail)plus au sud ( frontiere des Etats-Unis ) on capte des gars sur cams dans une terre qu’ont loues à un fermier

I would fish until there was some one holding the pole..........

BUT I would not use their pole.....

You’re missing the point. Public land is first come, first serve and nobody as the right to reserve or be entitled to any spot simply because they made the decision to leave their gear behind. Leaving stuff behind is considered littering and conservation officers can and do write tickets. I have personally seen people receive tickets and have also been the guy who reported people (separate permanent blind and stand builds on public land) who feel entitled to spots.

You want to use that spot? Get there first each day you intend to hunt. There is no grey area at all.

Don’t like how public land works? Secure private land to have exclusive rights.

If his blind was disassembled neatly I don't see anything unethical. Use the spot, who cares. Leave your information or risk it being stolen.

Disassembled is a pleasant surprise versus it potentially being gone altogether depending on the passerby

Do people actually block trails? that's a Giant D move!!!

I'm a normally a very calm person and will typically just smile and try my best to be friendly but if came in and was expected to make an Austin Powers 67 point turn in the bush id lose my freaking mind.

I feel the exact same way. Leaving your blind there doesn't mean you were there first

Yes. I've seen one truck with the back window smashed blocking a road. I've even come across people hanging signs saying it's their spot and no one was in sight.

100%, I get that it can be a pain setting up and taking down a blind or tree stand everytime but don’t expect it to be a place holder at the spot. I’m not going to mess with someone’s gear but if it’s not occupied and I show up first I will be hunting the spot.

I'm not gonna say id smash the back window but I'm not gonna say I wouldn't smash the back window.

The other issue is that people use these trails for non hunting all year too.

A sign or blind can just be ignored but fully blocking a trail is a top tier D-bag move...

This is what you see in northern Quebec on public land ....

One sign says "Hands up!" and the other "Danger!"

Nail on the head. I’ll never disturb what you’ve set up, hell I won’t even use your blind, but don’t expect to claim the spot just because you left all your stuff there.

yup there are people out there that will park their truck on the line to block access and then go down a few hundred meters and set up their blind, then they get all upset when you drive past them on your way to where your planning to hunt a few miles further in

I'm not going to damage their truck as I said before

there was one group that hunted in an area that I hunted in that were bad for this sort of behavior, they got the message when they found that someone was taking a big crap in their fire pit every day

You are missing the point. You didn't read what I was quoting
I would use the spot - as you say - its public land, it's for everyone to use equally
I just would not use their gear - it's not mine to use

I hunt an area that has the usual weekend warriors on the roads but there are also a number of hunters who hunt on foot and know the mountains very well. They know all the choke points as I do and there are several good spots on the mountain to ambush hunt. In one spot there is a ground blind made of natural materials, it's been there for over 20 years. It gets used by many different hunters that know about it each season. In one of my favorite spots I have hunted for over 20 years now , I named it "my rock" a long time ago. Big moss covered rock outcrop shaped like a couch... very comfy spot to spend a day. Anyhow someone put a single man treestand way up one of the trees in my spot. I had an idea who put it there and knew that he was a weekender due to work and he lived in the town nearby. As the years went by I got a treestand of my own and hearing the old timer who put that stand in was no longer hunting, rather than use his stand, I put in one of my own, a 2 man ladder stand that is chained and strapped to the tree. It covers different shooting lanes than the other stand but if someone went in that stand while I was in mine they would have a clear view of me in mine. Anyhow, I don't leave the ladded attached to the stand during the off season instead it is well stashed in a location nearby. I have shared the location with cgn'er MD and one other friend who hunts with his sons. If I know I am making 2 trips in a season I will leave the ladder attached and if someone uses it, I hope they do so safely. One issue with leaving a stand up is if someone isn't careful and injures themself in a fall..... that might be no good so usually the ladder is in it's hiding place after each trip.

As for OP and the ground blind issue..... if no one is there, set up your gear and hunt. If the guy shows up, like other's have said, have a conversation maybe swap phone numbers to work out hunting days. This is what we do with my deer spot.... everyone knows I hunt certain dates every year and I only hunt there during the week days and this allows MD and my other friend a way to figure out what days they can count on be able to sit in the stand. Last year i took a small buck on my first trip and another small buck on my 2nd trip..... MD slipped in there between my trips.... I actually bumped into him on the road out after trip one.... well he bagged a dandy buck off the stand and I was sure happy for him.

anyhow.... pays to have other spots but it can also pay to make new friends and figure out a way to share the spot and the intel that can be shared as the season progresses.
