I missed one in here last week, he was rubbing a sapling an showed sign of the rut-
i stuck a camera up and left it for a week, then delayed retrieving it until only This afternoon actually....

i decided to stalk across the hill, into the gulley an work it up to the top ridge, come back down onto my camera........................

** insert hindsight - should of went direct LOL

Anyway- i sighted only Fallow deer in deep bush, seemed strange no sambar--- little did i know, they were 30 mins infront of me today-

check the Time--- an for some reason he is goin UP-----

, as i neared the River to cross to the Vehicle, I stumbled upon a Dead Stag carcass about a Week old, no more....... i started feeling down, I shouldnt have missed Last week...... but If You Miss, ya can Bet the Next Bloke wont............. an i went home sorta sad.

Got Home, had a shower and went through my Trail camera..........

no action really, a Dingo chasen a Roo at night, then Today it all happened.

First this guy strolls down----- not unusual.....

But I cant measure him, an may never although im going to be taking my Sneeking Boots tomorow ... and a 35 whelen for the chance we meet.

il report back, cos il make a song and dance about it if i find it!!!

Cheers.. the hunts on.

Fellas, i woke to the alarm, i looked outside an i said... "today is proberly the day, but it will have to wait".
with that i could of had a 4 hour overcast, wet underfoot stalk in what was otherwise crunchy country.... go figure.

What i am doing though is listening to the rain on the roof as i sit in the shed and tinker with a Buck mount to complete whilst it is raining for the next 3-4 days--
im hoping this will not be too long, but rather have them start to sign up the place a bit more if she has just come into cycle- i may be able to pattern them as i stalk in, that is the theory anyway.

i got all confsed now ive got the scope on the Whelen.. it always happened- too many guns doin the same thing an too much novelty in them all.
il be totin the 30-06 i rekon, oint an shoot 250m if there is some long shot offered but im visualising it a nice an close encounter but with some luck i get the jump..

wet weekend shouldnt see many out hunting this weekend, but next weekend is a 4 day long one, so people Everywhere, it will have to be a few sessions next week-

ill report back-

Cheers

Cool pics!
In that bush, looks like there would be opportunity for a bow shot...

While the '06 will work, the Whelen seems like it would be more fun...
Then again, your 375 Win would be great for this scenario too!

ohh Stop it!!
im already head spinning with the recollection of the Whelen for duty.... let alone throwin the Lever gun into the mix haha!! but ya know what.... its Ruger 1 country- 1 shot before they are gone... lol.

Nah ya spot on , on all accounts... an yeah this country would suit bow hunting, stalking but also ambush... the problem with the sambar is 9 times out of 10 they use a different path down/up, pending on that day/ previous days weather.... but in sayin that there is places where there is a 90% chance one wll walk through-- there is a 99.99% chance it wont be one like this, but that why we are out there i guess !!

that "smaller" one, is still a 27 inch animal , mature... above an average head for these days!

a few cameras spread contouring the hill would give more indication of when an where they are traversing... the idea would be to get in early above them an await passing, or afternoon, below them , awaiting a pass , as these pictures show :)

nah im all back into the 30-06 its just too handy , like carrying it, like its closeness, i may of just purchased a box of 165gr Woodleighs AND a box of 200GR WOODLEIGHs....... kind of liking the idea of those with a better powder than im using - to actually get the same speed ive got with 180s now... none of which is fast .lol

Awesome animals.
I was struggling to see a difference between the bulls, wondering same bull just at different head angles and circling around perhaps.
But the bull in the first pic sure does look like its brow tines come off closer to the head than the 2nd bull.

I'm more used to looking at elk on my trail cams with more pointy things that make them easier to tell apart.
Keep us posted on your wanderings, your posts are a highlight for us.

Happy to enable you Rhys! LOL
But I can side with you packing your left handed Browning too!
Looking forward to more planning for next year! (So who's enabling who here?!?! LOL)

Spring Rut? Or do they rut all year?

yeah just starting to Rut mate! they do not rut like all other animals, it can be 3 months or so, each animal only turns on for short period but the bulls can wander for months as different hinds cycle, its weird......... but im finding it seems to be now thats Hottest. August seems to bring them from woodowork, September sees them up the bums of hinds, an october alot of good ones get shot.. weather this is post rut lazyness, a bit over worked an trying to relax, or still raged up wandering where proberly shouldnt be!?

none cast the same time, one gulley system may see 3 velvets and 1 hard, an likely 3 hard whilst one in velvet... i think this comes down to sporadic breeding, different calf drops, out of sync animals from high populations for so long, be interesting to see what next few yrs bring with alot less animals on the ground.

haha Yeah thats a fair call too!! They are an animal that needs to be hunted, an seen to be respected i believe :)
Good times ahead- even thus far out Im fairly excited!!

be in touch BR!

Those Brows in the first animal are of Trophy length! id say 20 inches !! so there is a good 30 inch of main beam there "trophy spec" , on the douglas scoring system, the Brows will make up alot of the score which pushes these bigger deer into that 200 class - his main inner beams may be what lets him down from being a top 20 head, as long tines obviously help nudge that score up.
Douglas score is wank wank but it defines an average deer of 180 class an those of 200+ .
The 2nd bull, has much smaller Brow tines, but is a very typical Animal- he is possibly older in age too telling by the block head and shows sign of rutting earlier than the Larger antlered animal looking at Body leanness in the ass end.

he has good mass in the antlers an may not of even been 30 inches, an awesome animal that is just as difficult to locate as the next-

the length of ears is approx 7 inches looking at them from front, start tunnin those up the antlers an your should be in the high 28s an maybe even just below the 34 mark. wow.
skull length seems simimliar on all mature anumals, so a quick glance of close to "2 head" of antler.. wack him.

these hinds 'live' there, you can put a camera on these deer all year and you wont hardly see stags until late winter :)

they are fascinating in the fact they are not so habitual like other deer species.

Appreciate the thanks on posting, nice to hear.. was not sure if species an stuff is too different to be of no interest here but all reports seem to be enjoying these big ones and the little spotty ones :)
