When you purchase from a retailer online, typically how long is it before you get a transfer email or some kind of update beyond the order being processed and completed (with Canada Post tracking number that CP doesn't recognize yet)?

My order was placed, processed, and completed on September 7th but I haven't heard anything since. Just wondering if that's normal in these times. For reference, I'm in NS and the retailer is in Ontario. Thanks!

Most the retailer will not email you with the transfer number. Ofter however, you may find the reference number in the "notes" section of your order information of your account. Depends on the retailer.

Thanks for the reply. There's no reference number on the invoice or my online profile with them. I sent them an email to see what's next.

If the retailer is in Ontario, then to my understanding you'll be waiting approx a year before the transfer gets made. Sept purchases are looking to be completed in 2024 unless the Ontario CFO brings in some help.

I know there are some people on the forum who are keeping dates and records of when transfers should go through, I'm sure someone will be kind enough to correct me if I have given you the wrong date

OP is from Nova Scotia so their CFO will handle the transfer. The timelines you are referring to are for Ontario buyers not retailers, be it from any store in the country as the transfer is completed by the Ontario CFO. You can buy from Ontario retailers with a quick turn around if you are out of Province.

Thanks for the clarification. That's good news for the OP.

I tried calling a few times today and no answer. I'll try again on Monday. My email wasn't answered. Not too worried. Yet. Lol

Nova Scotia CFO will approve the transfer in a day if they already have a club membership on file.

It depends on the business their process time. Took Cabelas a month to process and ship out a restricted, that the NS CFO approved it in a day.

So me just recently getting my RPAL, joining the club, and this being my first purchase might be the slow down in all this? Maybe this is normal for the first time.

Many retailers wont give you a transfer number unless you request it at time of purchase or at a later date. Nothing will really “slow down” your transfer other than when the dealer submitted it to CFO. If they put it in a pile on Sept 7 and waited a week until Sept 14 for more sales as an example, then that will add time but you’re still going to be faster for a September purchase than an Ontario resident will be from a June 5 purchase.

Did you send the NSCFO a copy of your gun club membership? Clubs do not, so that can delay transfers.

Depending on the retailer - they SHOULD process your order within a day or two, and businesses submit the information electronically. With business transfers, they almost never give you the reference number unless you ask them for it.
Contact your provincial CFO and give them your information, if you haven't heard back from the retailer after calling and emailing them. Many stores are still not even answering phones and some of them have so many emails it takes them 3-4 days to reply.
If you're in NS, I heard the wait times there are quite short, but calling your CFO directly is the best way to get your transfer completed quickly.

No, I didn't. To be honest, I didn't even know that was a thing. I will on Monday. Thanks for the tip, I appreciate it.

Email them a copy of your range membership

Calling the CFO doesn't speed up the process. You're just gonna get we are processing them as fast as you can. So I let them do their thing. Recently my transfers been only taking 24 hours. One was 5 days as the CFO was away at a shooting competition. I also sold a pistol to a guy in NS and that was 24 hours. This has all been post May.

Thank you! Really appreciate you providing this info to me. Email being sent! You guys are awesome.

You will get a email if they have it, that the transfer is approved, from the CFO, than I would phone the store to tell them that so they will check their system, and ship it when they get their notice, it should be at the same time as yours, than you wait for Ca Post, than you wait for the regist. slip to come in the mail ,from Ca Post some more.
In the mean time stock up on ammo.
It is a hurry up and wait kind of thing.;)

CFO emailed me for my gun club membership Tuesday morning and approved the transfer immediately. I sent all the info and transfer to the retailer and they confirmed and said they’d put my order in queue to go out asap. Maybe tomorrow it will finally be sent lol
