I have a fresh shotgun stock for an old old shotgun. I was thinking about making a brass buttplate to put on it, but I have no idea where to get a chunk of brass that particular size roughly to do it. Any ideas?

Hi

One word:

Ouch!

I'm sure that back in the good old days they pounded them out of a piece of brass plate. Today I'd go for finding one that is close and then playing with files to knock it down to size.

Some of the good old shot guns used horn/bone, you can stain it .
Would be easer to work than brass, you need sharp files, rasps for
brass. Also you see some hi grade shot guns with no butt plate,
the wood is curved same as a pad and rounded some and then
light checkering, real nice.I am not sure if brass would look right,
What type of shot gun? Any steel place would have brass,
also knive making supplers, also I think I have seen this at
"house of tools".

Hi

Where are you located? If you are near any major city, try ht tp://www.metalsupermarkets.com/

Try TSC. Last I checked they had brass bar stock. Maybe the buyer could point you in the right direction.

Otherwise, try looking for local businesses that either deal or use metal. Tin smiths, welding shops, metal recyclers, etc.

Fry have you considered a piece of contrasting wood for a buttplate? Some Gaesar Guerinni shotguns have this and it looks sharp. Rosewood, Zebrawood, Redhart or Black Walnut would be interesting. Should be available at Home Depot or similar.
