M14 cosmoline question

I soaked my bolt in boiling water and simple green and it came out pretty clean without disassembly. After air drying I took a hair dryer to it and the little bit of cosmoline that was left ran out. Getting the bolt apart and back together without a specialized tool is a huge pain. Even with the tool it isn't always an easy process.

I just used G96 Crud Cutter(that what was on the bench today, mighty expensive cleaner) put the bolt on a light color rag and sprayed it till the rag wasn't the cosmo color(of course I moved it around after every spray) Brake cleaner, carb cleaner etc works great as well plus way cheaper.

honestly. I didn't find cleaning it that hard. maybe these ones had a light coat on it....??
Mine just had what seemed like a light brown oil on it....it wasn't gooey or sticky or wax like.
I remember years ago when I got my M1 Carbine....now that was packed in a bees-wax like substance and wrapped in wax paper....that was a #####!!

These M14's...piece of cake.

Well I stripped her down today and I think it went pretty well (considering it's my first m14 take down too). I used engine degreaser and then soap and water and it cleaned up well. Gave her a little G96 and we're good to go :)

Is it necessary to disassemble the bolt when cleaning off the cosmoline? It doesn't sound like something I want to try on my own yet.

It is not necessary for cleaning, it is a must for measuring headspace if
you use saami gauges.

Leave a little cosmoline here and there for that military smell :)
