Was looking at getting a Ruger Frontier rifle. Handled one the other day and I really liked the quick aqquisition with the scout set up. looks like the perfect little brush gun for me. I'm trying to decide which caliber to go with.
Narrowed it down to 308 or 7mm-08. Would the 308 be better in regards to bullet deflection in the bush? Ballisticly the 7mm-08 has the advantage from what I can see but this gun will never be used for shots passed 300 yards(Realistically it will be primarily a still hunting gun in the bush so shots will be more around 100 yards). My hunting rigs already consist of Rem Mountain in .270 and a Model 7 in 7mmsaum so would the 308 be the logical next step.
Thanks for any advice
Billy

P.S I would love to find one in 300wsm or 325 wsm but I've heard there impossible to locate.

unless you already have too many .308s i would go with that, simply for the widest availability of ammo including cheap plinking ammo.
some people will roll their eyes at this, but the .308 also adheres closest to Jeff Cooper's 'scout rifle' concept, and the Ruger Frontier is a hell of a lot more accurate than the Steyr Scouts from the groups i have seen. its main drawback is lack of iron sights and lack of a DM - but one of these can be easily remedied.

they just released them in the .338 Federal, might want to consider that instead if you reload (and already have too many .308s like i do :)). you can simply reform .338 Fed brass from widely available .308 brass with a full length sizing die, and theres a huge selection of .338 bullets widely available.

Choose the 7mm-08 if you want to wear the T shirt, join the fan club, and the small cult following on here. Meetings are wednesday night behind the Bingo hall. Bring chips and beer or no one will let you in. Be ready to raise your glass and chant the praises of the 7mm-08. Telling a small story involving you and the 7mm-08 will bring you extra smiles and chuckles and closer into this fraternity.

...or go with the .308 and be told you have warts and are boring.

Your decision may have been made for you through local firearms use by-laws. I'm not seeing it anywhere but there may be a calibre restriction in Bruce County.

Get the 358 Winchester! :)

Sorry Dan - I knew you had a a bunch of just about everything short barreled and long. I wasn't responding to your 338Fed comment (I can see you would think that). But I was puttin my 2 cents out there for the thread originator's question - "Which caliber for a Frontier". Just adding my vote 4 the .358 to Kevan, Why Not, and Troutseeker.
