Yep. Strip it. Steam it. Sand it a bit. Watco or Antique oil it. Take your time.

I picked a similar M70 223 Rem out of the Calgary gun show last spring. 600$ iirc. The bluing was very good but someone let it bounce around a bit too much, the original finish was toast. So I refinished it and it turned out really nice. See.

Very nice job on that. Colour is so much better than the factory stain. Makes me want to tackle mine this winter.

Pictures might be misleading me - but perhaps that magazine box / floor plate needs a second look - on my rifle, the upper surface of the floor plate, and therefore the lower edge of the mag box, are flush with the bottom of the stock. Perhaps was a magazine box to get a smidgeon more depth?
The floor plate does fit up against the stock.
Picture with the shadow is misleading.

I enjoy refinishing these. This M70 243 varmint rifle was refinished exactly the same as the 223 above. Turned out much lighter. But still good. They don’t make any two trees the same thankfully.

FWI, I have a '64 m70 in .270 Win wot I paid about $900 for last winter. It came with a Leupold 3-9X scope. Recently bought an m70 chambered in .375h&h for around $1000 more made in 2012 (without glass).
 
Holy moly Bucky, that M70 looks mint as far as the wood goes!

I agree, some steam, a stripping a refinishing of the stock, and the value goes up a hundred bucks or more to the right person.
