I recently acquired a model 70 featherweight in 6.5x55. I'm looking to spend about $1000 on scope and mounts. What are some nice combinations for a classy all-around hunting setup? Pics appreciated.:)

You can get a classy rig for less than a grand. I am partial to Zeiss conquest 3x9x40's, but a fixed 6x42 Leupold would look pretty good and be functional on that rifle.

I have a 1.5-6x36 Bushnell Elite on my Fetherweight in Leupold Dual Dovetail bases and Low rings but it is a heavy scope, so I think a better alternative would be a Leupold VXIII 2.5-8x36 in the same bases and rings.

So your the lucky bastard who picked it up!

If your going to spend that much, I would suggest looking for a Khales American. I think they are available in 3-9 power. Their nice, as their essentually a Swarovski, with a smaller price tag. The thing is, the optics are great, and the overall weight is nice and light, perfect for my soon to be featherweight 6.5x55. :p

Thanks for the suggestions. I was thinking of a VX-L series Leupold. I found some on ebay out of the eastern US for a good price, the ad says no problem shipping to Canada, no extra charges, duty etc. I have heard differently elsewhere. Has anyone had success buying scopes off ebay from the US?

I've never bought anything off Ebay. I know lots of people order from the US, but my undertanding is you can only ship somthing gun related across to a certain price point. Anything over that price and the hoopla starts. Even if they only hassle one guy out of ten, that's too often for me. Good luck with your decision.

It is no permitted to ship a scope from the US into Canada without the proper Export permits. You can both get into big problems.

A Zeiss Conquest 3-9 is a great buy if the weight doesn't bother you, for a lighter scope look at the Leupold 2.5-8, try to compare them both side by side ultimately that should make up your mind.

Agreed, VXIII 2.5-8x36 with a B&C reticle, under your price or even go with a VXII 3-9x33 ultralight with the LR reticle, new this year and priced real nice.

I've got a vari-x ii 2x-7x-33mm sitting in burris zee extra lows on my 7mm-08 m70 classic featherweight. The fit is perfect, but I think I'd go with a vx-iii 2.5-8, or a fx 6 if I was doing it again. I really like the mounting height though- just enough clearance for the butler creek, but no more. I'd go with talleys, if they wer a bit lower...
